Staying Excited About Your Startup Company

In the early days of a startup company, the founders can rely on excitement and adrenaline to get the ball rolling. However, when the well of excitement and adrenaline goes dry, that ball suddenly feels extremely heavy. How do you go about staying excited about your startup?

Pace Yourself
In the beginning stages of a startup company, you have to think about the long haul. Don’t go 100 miles per hour, seven days a week and 18 hours a day. Pace yourself so you don’t experience burnout.

Have a Plan
Once the ball starts rolling, be sure to stop and create a plan. Make it a step by step plan that you can follow. Having goals and reaching those goals keeps the excitement high.

Continue to Learn
Early on during the startup process, there is a lot of learning going on –whether you realize it or not. By continuing to learn, you can help ensure that you will continue to innovate and have fun.

Hire Appropriately
When hiring for a startup, take personality into consideration. It’s much easier being excited if those around your are naturally upbeat and don’t drag down the morale.

I think every one of your points need to be taken to heart. I have seen too many start ups with no plan, rushing through the gate with the wrong people.

    Hey Stephen,

Great post. As one of three employees at a startup company (I’m the community manager) I can really relate to this post. I especially agree with the last point, hiring appropriately – I am a super upbeat, positive, motivated person and I think it makes it easy to be constantly excited and pumped up about what we’re doing at our company. But it’s not just being positive that matters – it’s being passionate. Find someone who believes in what you’re doing, it makes it easier for them to be truly evangelical about the brand.
And as much as it’s great advice to pace yourself, I’m not sure how many people actually abide by that advice! I think entrepreneurs by nature are extremely motivated and unable to slow down, but that’s part of the excitement.

    Cheers!

Having a plan is crucial, even if its in your head. Get it down on paper just to clarify it to yourself to see if it make sense and it its realistic.

The plan will change all the time, don’t expect it to be written in stone.
