Setting Up Your Home Office

Many small businesses can be run right from home, but what do you need in your home office to get your small business up and running? I talked a few weeks ago about the pros and cons of running your small business from a home office.

Home offices are on my mind right now since I’ve been working on revamping my own home office.

You definitely need to set a space aside to dedicate to your home office, even if it’s just a small corner with a filing cabinet or a small desk. It will at least give you a space to put your business information someplace separate from the rest of the household.

What you include in your home office depends on the nature of your business. Personalize the space to meet your business needs, and your personal taste.

You’ll want to make your home office comfortable and inviting so you’ll enjoy working there, since you’ll need to spend some time there every day.

A few things you may want to consider for your home office if you have the space and the budget:

  • A comfortable office chair can go a long way toward getting you to enjoy working.
  • Make sure you have the office equipment you need to work from home, including a PC, or laptop, printer, scanner, and phone.
  • Make the space friendly and fun to be in. Set up near a sunny window with a good view, and make sure you include personalized items around your office to make yourself comfortable.
  • Try to keep the clutter to a minimum so you have a clean efficient working space.

What do you think is essential to a great home office space?
