Scheduling Your Writing Shows You the Truth

coaching.jpgI’ve written about the importance of scheduling your writing time. When I’m coaching writers, I ask them to actually put their writing time on their calendars. If we’re just getting started, I suggest making a writing appointments over a two week trail period.

When we get together again, I ask how well the schedule worked. Often the answer is it worked well. But it’s not unusual for a client to admit they didn’t keep to the schedule. We talk about the reasons and take another stab at it. Sometimes it takes three or four tries to get it to work.

Once and awhile, however, the client simply will not be able to create a writing schedule they can keep to. That’s when they have to face a hard truth or two:

  • If you can’t find time for writing, maybe it’s time to let the writing go. There’s no way to be a writer without getting the writing done. There’s no shame in discovering that writing isn’t for you, or isn’t for you right now; in fact, if that’s what’s true, it’s liberating to discover it and let it go.
  • Or, if you still have some writing you feel must get done, you’ll have to hire someone else to do it… a ghostwriter. That can work too.

I’ve written about more about planning your writing at: http://writingwithvision.com/articles/awritingplan.htm
