Saying Good-bye or How to Plan for Blogger Turnover

Dear Business and Blogging Readers,

I’ve really struggled with this post – even though it’s one of the shorter ones I’ve written.

I’ve never been good with “Good-byes.”  I’m much better with “Hello’s”, “See You Later’s” and “Y’all Come Back Now, Y’hear?”

But the time has come for me to say good-bye to Business and Blogging.  I am leaving to focus more on my own blog and other writing commitments. Even though it was my decision, it is still hard to let go. I will miss being part of the b5media network.  I will miss my co-blogger Laura who always has such enthusiasm and insight.  And I will miss sharing with you readers.

All businesses should have a succession plan and a contingency plan, and that includes their communication strategy and blog.

So my final post is a reminder to you as you design your business blog, to develop contingency plans for vacations, illness, and employee turnover.

  • One approach is to have multiple bloggers so that they can cover for each other.
  • Another is to have posts written in advance to allow for disruption in schedules.
  • And a third is to build a network so that you can find a new blogger to transition quickly and smoothly.

B5media has a huge network of bloggers and a great reputation. I see on the problogger job board that the open position for this blog has been closed. I don’t know personally who will be taking my spot at businessandblogging but I know they will be of high caliber and will bring their own enthusiasm and unique perspective to the blog.

I will be back from time to say “Hello” and to see how the blog is developing.  I hope that you will too.

So for now, instead of “Good-bye”, I’ll just say “See you later” and “Y’all come back now, y’hear?”

It’s a great goodbye post Liz! I’ll miss you too, and this blog as well.

I’ve really enjoyed meeting the community that surrounds Business and Blogging. I especially like that some of the dialogs that we’ve had here have helped others. I hope that continues to be the case, no matter who takes the reins here.

I’m not much good at goodbyes, so I guess I’ll let this comment be mine.

Best wishes to Liz and all our readers!

Pretty neat, to provide such a pertinent and useful post in lieu of just saying ‘Bye!

It’s a while now since I had the idea of a blog dedicated to how blogging works *for* business, as distinct from how blogging works *as a* business. As the first blogger here I am so glad b5media and Liz & Laura found one another. And I’m glad it appears that , from what you say here, the show will go on.

Every good wish to both of you in your next stage of this wonderful journey of blogging and life (there’s a difference?).

Great blog and we appreciate all the hard work you’ve accomplished. Blogging for business is ‘big business’ for my company and we appreciate all the advocates out there that made it happen.

    Hi Douglas

Thanks for the kind words. I really like your blog – good business blogging info and the “mustache” picture is great – and for a good cause – I’m a big supporter of Kiva!

    Take care.

Gosh. This blog was so tied to Des – he had made it so great that it was nearly impossible to fill his shoes. So I didn’t. This blog sat and sat because it was so difficult to find writers that could set the right tone – until I met Liz and Laura. You guys were just a brilliant match. You picked it up and made it your own, while never losing touch with the original message from Des. I sincerely wish you the best of luck. You will be sorely missed.

    Thanks Kelly – too kind.

You are right – Liz and Laura have done a brilliant job of, as you say, making the blog their own and still keeping to the original message, i.e. about how blogs can work for business.
