5 Favorite News Readers: 3 – Bloglines

The Bloglines feed reader used to be my reader of choice.

I haven’t been using Bloglines for a while now, since discovering the two readers reviewed so far in this series, NewsGator Online and BlogBridge. I don’t recall actually doing a detailed comparison, but one disincentive for not continuing to use Bloglines was that for some unknown reason my login details for Bloglines stopped being recognised: the standard procedure of sending a request for a lost password did not work because not even the email address was recognised.

So I lost the set of feeds I had set up.

But I have noticed from time to time that other bloggers recommend Bloglines for people starting out with blogging and feed readers, so I thought I should re-visit this former favorite of mine and still a favorite of many, as far as I can gather.

I re-discovered that it is still an easy service to sign up to.

Bloglines runs on the web, inside your browser of choice, so there is no software to download and install. Like the other services reviewed so far, it is free. Adding feeds to your Bloglines page is easy and the system of folders means you can organise the feeds so that they don’t all blur together.

Although I don’t find the interface as intuitive and helpful as I find those of NewsGator Online and BlogBridge, for example in being able to quickly scan the latest updates with “see at a glance” display of feed snippets, it is quite straightforward.

In short, a good reader and a popular one. Keen users of Bloglines might like to weigh in here with why they prefer it to other feed readers.

Great idea, reviewing your 5 favorite rss readers. I can’t believe you have five readers you like! Until I made my own RSS reader, I only liked Firefox’s “Live Bookmarks” for reading my feeds. I tried Bloglines, and many others (web-based and not), but until I just gave-up and built my own web-based reader. You can view my whole story about it if you want.
