I’ve spent the past few days trying to get over my initial disappointment at learning that my pretty boy Blood Elves were put on a steroid-only diet to pump them up a bit. Now, instead of the skinny pretty boys I’d so fallen in love with, I’ll be stuck rolling Fabio-wannabes with pointy ears.
Why, Blizzard, why?
Some speculate that Blizzard Execs were worried the skinny Blood Elves would be perceived as gay. And, in fact, lots of people (usually 12 year old boys – going by the spelling and grammar) have commented in various forums that, indeed, the Blood Elves looked a bit Queer Eye’d. Um, so? I thought this was the day and age of the metrosexual?
New vs. Old
There is nothing more ridiculous-looking than a male human in WoW. Seriously. They are quite possibly the most hideous creatures I have ever seen in my life.
In the same way that guys go on about playing females in-game because they like something “nicer to look at”, the WoW women of the world would like to be extended the same courtesy. Neanderthals are not attractive. Bring back our skinny Belfs.
My issue with this whole thing extends a little further, though, than just the this-is-attractive-vs-this-isn’t debate. Because in truth, the changes aren’t THAT severe. Though, I do maintain that I liked them better before. I just don’t get why Blizzard decided to change them. Was it really the “too gay-looking” thing? If so, have they seen their male humans in a dress?
And seriously, it just sends out the wrong message. Not all guys are bulked up. Not all guys need to be muscular to be manly. The change, to me, implies that it is not okay to be skinny if you’re a guy. And it is.
Official word from Blizzard on the subject:
As many players have noticed, we have made a slight change to the male Blood Elf character models. In response to concerns that the Blood Elf male appeared to be too feminine, and after reviewing the model from a visual and conceptual standpoint, the decision was made to increase the body mass to give them a more substantial, masculine feel. It was also important that as members of the Horde that the Blood Elves gave the impression of strength and a more menacing presence.
Thankfully, the world (of Warcraft) is up in arms about this whole thing, and I’m not the only WoW Lady who thinks this whole thing is ridiculous.
Well, at least they still have the dance moves. Oh wait, no. That might be going too.

[...] And after talking to all of my female WoWers I have a feeling most Blood Elf males are going to be played by girls. Heh. They are sexay. The male Blood Elves, I mean. Although, I am still pissed about their new models. [...]
LT,
The fact is, whether guys like it or not there’s also a lot of women playing WoW. And personally I’m getting fed up of hearing or reading that because they’re supposed to be the majority Blizzard, and the rest of the players, have to bow to their every desire.
I’m a woman, I play WoW, and I want the skinny belves back too. I think guys have enough manly characters to choose from as it is. A little diversity in the options wouldn’t hurt. No one’s forcing you to play one. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean other people have to be denied the possibility.
Also, if guys have no problems playing females in game, why in the world would they have problems playing skinny men? It’s just a game.
I hate the Belfs either way. My boyfriend is going to make one though, so I’ll have to get used to looking at him all the time *eye roll*.
I prefer the Draenei female of the new races. I wish they’d show more pictures of them!

I personally love gay elves.
I don’t mind the buff blood elves but I do prefer the skinny model better.
i hate to burst your bubble but most guys see “feminine” traits in a male character as undesireable and while its not difficult to come across guys who use the “i’m comfortable with my sexuality” line, those same ppl are reluctant to actually behave in these feminine ways, outside of humorous situations.
bottom line the majority of WoW players, whether you like it or not, would rather not see themselves playing a possibly gay looking/acting char.
Have you ever seen the ogres dance? I’ll have to take you into DM sometime.
I’d prefer that, actually :)
They could make them fat and overweight instead. There’s always that.
