A few months back we had a comparison of Windows Vista with Mac Tiger OS but Vista was still in a very early beta version. Microsoft has promised the “largest upgrade since Windows 95” in Windows Vista. Bentuser.com takes a look at build 5270, which will probably be one of the last intermediate releases before the “feature complete” Beta 2 release. In the article he looks at what this upgrade means in real terms by comparing it with the venerable Windows XP. The article covers the Start Menu, Window Switcher and other Window Management Features, Search, Windows Media Player 11, IE7, Media Center 2, Control Panel and some other features. Conclusion is that there is no doubt that Windows Vista is a major upgrade, well I’ve could tell you that;)

I just downgraded back to Xp-pro (I imaged my hd before installing Vista). Vista kept growing exponentially. This gave me an uneasy feeling – what is is it doing?? Where are these files? What are they for? Finally the OS was up to around 12gigs 2x what it started. That was enough for me
Windows Vista is “quite” an impressive OS because of new UI features but on the other hand, Windows Vista needs the ingredients that XP has and as far as i’m concerned, Windows XP is superior in terms of software compatibility, running gaming application and browsing capability of Vista in fairness can cope up with XP. But still Vista’s predecessor Windows XP is still the best.
I would not recommend Vista to even my worse enemy….it is without a doubt the worse OS ever. How could MS even tout this product?
in response to the microsoft windows desktop technician, since vista is quite a jump coding wise, why would anyone want to use an upgrade CD? personally, i don’t see the logic in installing a new operating system on top of an old operating system. there have been many problems with getting up to date drivers with vista, but driveragent.com helped me get updated drivers for xp and vista.
i haven’t had any big problems with vista since i installed it a few months ago. it could be possible that your family member didn’t follow the installation instructions and messed up their computer. i don’t mean to start an experience war, but most of the time computers “break” its because of user error and not the computer. the phrase “i hate this machine, it never does what i want, only what i tell it” comes to mind.
you can go into the settings and disable these notifications. i hated them too before i turned them off. now i like vista more than xp, but i still don’t mind using xp. i believe you have to turn off the user account control. open the start menu, click the picture at the top to open the User Accounts window, click turn user account control on or off, uncheck the box and click ok. if you have any other issues, search google for a solution. its worked for me so far.
in response to the
I HATE VISTA! it asks me for permission like 3 times each time i wanna open up a program. and bill gates wasted his money making this piece of crap. XP is far better.
VISTA stinks ive had nothing but trouble i have a new computer and blazing internet capibility and this thing chugs along like a old lady.I like security as well as the next guy. But not being about to access your mail unless you go to all programs and click run as administrator come on. I HATE IT. I want my XP.
many dips users have their own notions about , windows vista . but the features like parental ,aeroglass are important features of that o/s.new applications and games are preloaded with the system that’s why system must have 1gb RAM 4 good performace
though i don’t have vista in my computer for a good reason, it stinks, and i’m a certified microsoft windows desktop technician. i’ve used all the versions of windows including vista which one of my family members had and they called me one day soon after purchasing an upgrade for their computer which was running windows xp home, and they told me when they inserted the cd, their computer almost crashed, and i took a look at it, and found out that the upgrad isn’t totally automatic, certain a variety of different drivers won’t load with vista from xp home or professional. i went ahead and told my family member to get some blank cd’s the data storage type (700 mb capacity), then do a system back up, they did. then i walked them through the fresh loading of windows xp home which they had the one that came with their computer, when they re-loaded the xp and got it activated, the inserted the back up cd’s about 11 of them, they had about 7.5 gb’s of programs loaded on their disk drive, it took about 3.5 hrs. to back up and about the same to re-load. i must tell you, i’m very dissappointed in Vista, i expected the ultimate operating system from Microsoft, they’ve really dissappointed me. i get calls about Vista constantly from angry clients about this operating system, mostly compatibility problems, the system isn’t compatible with many older types of hardware or software. for the hardware most manufacturers do offer Vista drivers for their products, but software manufacturers require a sepereate licensing fee and that’s what’s driving all my clients batty. i tell them that i can’t do anything about the licensing fee’s imposed by the software manufacturers. i myself when i saw Vista i saw but few upgrades from XP, and i’m not in the least impressed. what Vista can do XP can do the same with some help with updated drivers. i was even offered a complimentary copy with it’s own product key from a client of mine who didn’t want their copy, and i told them no thanks, they’ve stored in an archive filing cabinet in their home and will never use it again. i to told them to keep it, i may get crazy some day and decide to chance using it for my own computer. i have a small network in my residence business. my site is http://www.thomascomputerservices.net, it’s a simple site, nothing compared to the geek squad (best buy stores) for that matter their own site, circuit city site, comp usa, radio shack, or even my own local cox communications where i reside in south orange county, CA. or other’s, but packed with inforamation. i am working on some flash elements that will be added to my site by labor day weekend in september. my xp pro has been by far the most efficient, proficient, steady, and most incredible operating system i’ve ever used, Microsoft really had their act together when they came up with XP. one of my sisters has a dell computer and had a dell technician come over to her residence and remove Vista and install XP Pro. i would have done it but her new computer is under manufactuers warranty and their service is free until her warranty expires, that’s when i take over. the bottom line is, Vista has been a real dissappointment for me and all end users i know. i wish microsoft would do something to make Vista more user friendly for end users, for me i don’t have a problem navigating with Vista, i just don’t think it’s any better than XP, just some slight advances i can get with XP with updated drivers, sorry but i must say what i feel, and i don’t think Vista has made a real hit with everyone i know with computers. XP is the best yet.
I ordered a new Dell Computer and it has Microsoft Windows Vista Basic Home Edition. I’m going to return it, before I throw it against my solid oak front door. Unless someone can tell me how to put Windows XP on this thing for free, I will go hunt me down a pc with XP. Windows Vista is the worst thing that Bill Gates ever came up with.
