Should Apple Fix the iPhone 4?

By now you have heard that the new iPhone can have some reception problems if you cover a certain spot on the phone with your hand. And though Apple CEO Steve Jobs denies there’s an antenna problem that needs fixed, the company is offering free protective cases to buyers of the latest iPhone.

Starting late next week, you can go to the Apple website and sign up for a free case. The company will allow you to choose from several case styles. All new iPhone 4 buyers through September 30 will be eligible for the a free case, and Apple will send refunds to those who already bought one of their Bumpers.

And though you might think that you shouldn’t have to cover your iPhone with a case (or a piece of duct tape), Jobs doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal.

“We’re not feeling right now that we have a giant problem we need to fix,” Jobs said. “This has been blown so out of proportion that it’s incredible.”

According to CBS News: “Jobs has said that the iPhone 4′s antenna issue isn’t widespread, with just over five out of every 1,000 (or 0.5%) complaining to Apple’s warranty service, and less than 2 percent returning the device.”

But Consumer Reports (and many others) think a long-term solution needs to be found for the antenna problem. The free bumper case isn’t exactly the fix they are looking for.

“We look forward to a long-term fix from Apple. As things currently stand, the iPhone 4 is still not one of our Recommended models,” Consumer Reports said.

My belief is that most people were going to get a case anyways, this promotion just saves the cost of a case for them. Until I receive mine I don’t mind the signal loss

I think it is just fair that there is a free iphone 4 case with all those connection problems. That is the least they could do.

@ Dreen4 – How can you say it’s not broken?? My sister brought her’s round yesterday and she had a full 5 bar strength, I covered the part of the iphone with my little finger, literally the tip of my finger, and within 2 minutes she had 0 bars… Working as intended you think? really??

My iphone does have signal-loss. I think the phone is very nice looking, i don’t want a case for it! But it sucks yes “sucks” that i need one just to get correct signal. Jobs stated ” were not perfect” really really…then why every year does apple keep making a new iphone. Is it to beat competion or to nickle dime customers! Or to perfect this smart phone thing. Just my 5% problem phone with one of the 1000 phones that don’t have signal loss. Ps. Verizion sucks!!

I do have a signal-loss problem if not in case. I have a bigger problem with Job’s arrogance, and political side-stepping. His change of stance from “most magical device ever” to “we’re just like every other smartphone”, and his whole non-apology is disingenuous. I will keep my iPhone 4, but I am even more of an Apple/Jobs agnostic than ever!

This would have been so easy to fix and truly not a big deal, but Jobs opening his big mouth and defending like a zealot despite the evidence has turned this into a PR nightmare it never needed to be.

There is nothing to fix. It’s not broken. You still don’t get it. Omg the media are a bunch of boneheads.
