Do you Hate Windows Vista? If your PC is running Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Windows Ultimate and you’re fed up with the OS, due to performance issues or what not, you may be able to ditch Vista for XP Pro. Microsoft seems to be quietly allowing users to downgrade to Windows XP Pro which is a good thing as Vista hasn’t matured yet.
According to a PC world blog entry: “Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo are just a few of the system manufacturers offering downgrades. Each of these PC makers offer an XP Pro recovery disc to those who request one that can be used to revert a Vista machine to XP Pro.
Dell, HP, and Lenovo customers can request a Windows XP Pro recovery disc to be included with their purchase of a Vista machine – should they want to revert in the future. Customers who already have purchased a Vista-PC can request an XP Pro recovery CD for between $15 to $20 by calling technical support. ”

I have had vista on my laptop since about Feb 07 and i just built a desktop in December and guess what I put on it? Vista! Yup, I put vista on it and it runs great. boots up in around 50 seconds and I’m triple booting flawlessly. Vista isn’t that bad, but I could, I would have waited until sp2 this Feb.
P.S. My SLI config works fine (2x8800gts FTW!)
I just got of the phone with Microsoft. No they are NOT the ones that are allowing a revert or downgrade to XP. They said that a Vista user can request a downgrade from there oem system builder (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.) and that those companies can choose to provided a downgrade how ever they like. They will usually require the unit to be sent back to them because they recover the Vista license for a future sale. You are actually trading in Vista for XP.
Ubuntu’s new release with 3D desktop makes Vista look like a piece of trash.
I bought a new Dell PC for my grandmother, I tried to get an XP disc from Dell but they told me all they’re willing to do is have me send back the desktop and they’ll install it. I told them I’d return the Vista disc, but they said they have to install it so they can put all their shit on it too.
Laughing all the way to Debian (Linux), also have XP, but never use it. I think MS has a tester somewhere in their sub-basement, but no one listens to him

My choice is also Windows XP. Even when reviewing high end laptops, Vista always find a way to bring it to its knees. sigh
I don’t understand they sell you a system that grinds to a stop,that costs around the $400. mark .Then it costs you another $20. to recover the system that almost worked well.

Good thing! I have talked to several people who have no plans of ever upgrading to Vista. They are going to skip Vista all together.

My wife loves Vista–It is pretty but is S O S L O W. It drove me totally nuts–such a bloated thing. I put a dual boot on with PCLinux and I am humming right along…
Interesting. You are almost forced to get Vista with a new machine and then you re charged to downgrade. I guess profits on upgrades were not enough. Now it is time to make profits on downgrades.

Wow. Thanks for sharing this. But does it only apply to people with Vista Business or Ultimate? I have the Premium Home Edition or whatever it is and I’ve considered reverting.
I got my laptop downgraded to Windows XP MCE 2005 via HP Customer Support. I called and they said, I could purchase a recovery disc for 15$. I keep telling them, NO. They finally said, we will send you a box to send your laptop back in, we will put XP back on it there, then send it back to you. So I got XP back for free. And it only took a weekend. Sent in Friday, got back Monday.

I agree with you. I will not change my OS to Vista until it mature enough. Right now it has so many security leak.
A 13 year old virus can bypass Vista security easily. I’m sticking with XP for now. I read in one magazine, they said Vista is dead when they release Vista Basic.
