Difference between a MID vs UMPC

Intel’s Global Internet Segment Manager of Ultra Mobility, Mr Dan Monahan, tells us the big difference between a MID vs UMPC. In summary, you’ll get a MID if you are
a consumer and an UMPC if you are an enterprise user. A MID is Mobile Internet Device and the UMPC is Ultra-Mobile PC. Interesting MIDs include Lenovo’s new Menlow MID, while notable UMPCs are HTC Shift , and Everex Cloudbook.

* Runs a “heavy” OS like Vista
* Optimized for office-use applications like Excel, Word, etc.

* Consumer-class lifestyle device
* Runs a ‘lightweight” OS with quick startup like Linux
* Optimized for things like media playback and web surfing
* In 2009 (or so) Moorestown-based devices will be classed as MIDs only

I agree! Computer companies have no ideal what a normal user wants. I just want a pocket laptop with a touch type keyboard and I do not care what you call it but it needs to run full Windows.

So far I think both types of devices have no clue what most people want in a mobile computer. I want a basic laptop that I can touch type and carry in my coat pocket. I do not want a thumb input device. I also would say only geeks want a computer that you need a man purse to carry with your and also a geek to want to use pen only input.
