People tend to be wary of new technology and the common perception that cell phones cause brain tumors is an example. I remember when Johnny Cochrane died (a lawyer for O.J. Simpson) and many people cited the fact that his was almost never seen without a cell phone to his ear as a major contributor to the development of a fatal brain tumor.
However, a 30-year study out of Scandinavia argues that there is no link between the two. Apparently, brain tumors did not become any more common with the increased use of cell phones during the 90s.
A team at the Danish Cancer Society looked at the “annual incidence rates of two types of brain tumors – glioma and meningioma – among adults aged 20 to 79 from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden from 1974 to 2003.”
They did notice, though, that there has been a gradual increase in brain tumors but the trend began in 1974 which is well before cell phones were around.
Of course, this is just one study so I would be interested to see the results of other long-term studies before I develop a strong opinion.
Do you think that cell phones cause brain tumors?
