Apple tablet dubbed “iSlate”?

Rumor has it that Apple’s mythic tablet computer will be named the iSlate, and will debut in January with… (wait for it…) a near-magical screen that can create bumped buttons for your fingers to feel as you type.

Apparently, Apple has just filed a patent for something called “keystroke tactility arrangement on a smooth touch surface” using some sort of “articulating frame,” which is a technobabble way of describing a screen that can create actual physical bumps,  ridges, and concave depressions that your fingers can feel. Aside from the most obvious implementation — an on-screen keyboard that has physical buttons you can press up and down — the possibilities this presents are mind-boggling. We’re talking about a whole new way of interacting with a computing device.

That sound you now hear is the rest of the tech world drooling and peeing at the same time.

Another recent report indicates that Apple owns the domain name islate.com, which some pundits suggest points to the name of the device: the iSlate.

Another rumor insists that the company is holding a media event in late January to officially unveil the device, with availability to follow a few months later.
