One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to get in shape and/or lose weight. I should know. My resolution this year is related: To live healthier. Of course, in order to live healthier, one has to exercise and eat right. The good news is that these habits are more likely to help you save money overall in health costs. If you are taking care of yourself, you are less likely to end up with the costly diseases associated with obesity, poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle.

But it can be expensive to go to the gym, or to buy expensive home exercise equipment, like a treadmill. Happily, though, I received an email recently on behalf of the American Institute of Healthcare & Fitness, outlining some helpful strategies on how you can get a great body for a lower cost. Here are some of the suggestions from Director of Fitness & Wellness, John Rowley, on small investments that can yield big exercise health results:

Adjustable dumbbells

Jump ropes

Resistance tubing

Exercise DVDs

He also recommends using things you already have, by going for walks, using your stairs for exercises, and playing sports as a family. He points out that you can get discounts at your local recreation department, and I would add that if you are a student, or a spouse of a student, you can get access to university facilities at a discounted price.

In the end, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get into shape. All you need are a few items, and desire to make time to exercise.

It’s great to get strong. It’s even better if you can slim down in the process. I’ve gained weight this summer (7 lbs). Undoubtedly some of my weight gain is muscle, but there is also some fat in there. With a wedding coming up in two weeks, I’d like to slim down but I don’t want to lose any of my muscle.

Image: istockphoto

My first step is lots of running – lots. Fitness is a numbers game. If I want to accelerate the process, I’ve got to take the cardio up a notch. By doubling a normal cardio day (30 minutes), I’m roughly going to shove 1 month of training into 2 weeks (maybe more, maybe less – can’t be sure).

Meanwhile, I’ll only work on maintaining the muscle with good weight lifting workouts, but nothing extensive. I may experience some gains nevertheless, but nothing major. This rapid fat loss-fitness plan is well short of ideal, but when you’ve got to cut weight fast, you need to make a big upgrade.

Again, I’m still riding the Hype wave. Flipping through another magazine I came across a Jenny Craig or Weight-Watchers ad or something. I honestly can’t remember. The person said they had lost like 25 lbs in 2 months by using the system or product. What always catches my eye in ads is the little asterisk with “Results Not Typical“.

Image: © Everyjoe.com

Wouldn’t it be nice is they actually showed the Typical results instead of the one out of however many? Would it be nice to see the average Joe that only lost 7 lbs in 2 months? Wouldn’t it be nice to know what else the person that got these non-typical results had to do to get the results shown? Wouldn’t it be nice to know what kind of support they had, whether it be a dietitian, a personal trainer or what?

“Results Not Typical” is every companies way of not being accused of false advertising. Another one I like is “User Result May Vary“

Remember the” before and after” picture I showed before when I talked about the Bigger, Faster, Stronger movie ? Another “Trick” I always found quite silly was the before and after pictures for fat burning pills, where the person in the picture is holding a newspaper to “Prove” that it only took them a certain number of days to lose the weight and get cut.

Often times you can’t see the date on the newspaper, but they hold the news paper their hand in the before picture. Then they show another picture of the person ripped, cut and oiled down in the second picture, holding a newspaper that is supposed to be that certain number of days after the last picture.

Seriously, is this supposed to be believable? Who’s to say that you haven’t been holding on to that news paper for 4 months. This one is just as silly as any other way to sell a product. Some companies use and endorse bodybuilders in their ads and the bodybuilders probably not even using that product. Do you really think the hot chicks in the Supreme Protein ads are eating those protein bars? If they are, I bet they are burning holes in those bikini bottoms with the gas that protein bars tend to give you sometimes. If you read fitness magazines you know the Supreme Protein girls.

“Don’t believe the hype” is what Sean Dent from Bethenextstep echoes. Sometimes you have to try a product or read other reviews before you believe anything an ad says. I understand that ads are made to sell the product, to convince you that it’s good, but do they take us all for morons? Do you really expect to look like Ron Simmons after taking BSN’s Syntha 6 for a month (Which is a great protein), or Jay Cutler after taking a Muscletech product for a few weeks? The correct answer is “No”, unless you’re completely stupid.

Do fat burners, protein drinks, N.O. supplements and weight gainers work to do what they are designed for. Sure, most of them do, but you still have to work hard to benefit from them. You still have to eat right and put the supplement to work to do it’s job instead of ingesting it, just to let it pass through your body without making an impact.

What I’m getting at is this; if you see a fitness product ad in a magazine and you start to get sucked in by the hype of the ad, pull yourself together and get on the internet and start googling for reviews of the product. 99% of the people that review the product are people just like you and I. You can’t trust someone that is obviously paid to endorse the product. Weigh the pros and cons, see if this is a product that you think could benefit you and if you have any kind of health issues or might think that it may have a negative effect on you in some way, ask your physician.
