It’s officially less than a year away so I can get really excited by the new Tron movie that is coming to theaters on December 30, 2010. There isn’t a lot of information about the film yet since there’s still a while until it is released but I did spot a production still of the new light cycle. Check it out in all its glory:

In case you aren’t familiar with the movies, or if you have forgotten, the light cycles are designed to look a bit like motorcycles and are the primary means of transportation for the players inside of the computer program.

They are two-wheeled and leave a trail of light behind them and in the first movie, the light was the same color as the cycle. That trail can create a wall and if players hit them, they are out of the game so it will be interesting to see how it looks in the 2010 version. Here’s a look at the older light cycles:

What do you think? I personally feel that the updated light cycle stays true enough to the original but is cool enough to impress today’s audiences.

Fans who are anxiously waiting Tron Legacy to be released will have to hold out for more than a year since it will only come to theaters on December 17, 2010 but we do have a first look at it. It’s not much but it’s better than nothing! First, here’s the poster:

The film will be in 3D and it looks like it’s definitely going to draw on what people loved in the first movie which ironically bombed in theaters 28 years ago. It has since become a cult classic but I’ve loved it since the first time I saw it and, yes, I was just three or four years old.

In the original, Jeff Bridges starred as the brilliant computer programmer, Kevin Flynn, who had to battle his way back to the real world after getting stuck in virtual reality.

In Tron Legacy, the Master Control Program gets rebooted and Kevin disappears again, prompting his son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), to look for him in and out of the computer world.

The cast is rounded out by James Frain, Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett, and Michael Sheen but the most interesting thing is that Bruce Boxleitner is returning as Alan Bradley/Tron, the heroic protagonist of the original film.

If you grew up in the 80s, then you probably remember the movie Tron starring Jeff Bridges as a programmer abducted into a computer and forced to play gladiator-style games during his attempt to escape. I remember first seeing the game at an arcade when I was a kid. I was too young to play so I had to stand there and watch my brother and his friends have fun. I was thrilled, therefore, when I got the chance to enjoy a little old-school action.

I’m not going to lie. When I first downloaded and played this game, I was extremely frustrated. Gamers today are used to the controls being very sensitive (sometimes too sensitive) and the response time on Tron can be downright infuriating. When I finally got the hang of things, I actually had a really good time playing. If you’re thinking of downloading it, you should probably check out this video so you know what you’re getting into:

I think the worst levels for me were the MCP Cone and the Battle Tanks (pictured below). The Cone was fine, in the end, but it took me a few tries to figure out that you can actually shoot up instead of trying to bounce bullets off the wall. The Battle Tanks continues to be bad because, well, I’m actually just bad at any tanks games for whatever reason.

It’s not going to be the most challenging thing you’ve ever played but it’s fun nonetheless. It was a blast to sit there with two of my children and show them what video games looked like when I was a kid. Then, I made one of them get past the Battle Tanks level for me…
