I think it’s similar to when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was on – the people who watched the show were extremely loyal so it didn’t matter if it was attracting a ton of new viewers.

The fourth season of Supernatural is now available on DVD.  One of the stars, Jensen Ackles, had said that he thought it was going to be the last season but because the ratings were higher, they decided to go for another year.  Creator, Erik Kripke, has mentioned over the years that he only planned to have the show in production for five years so this next season (which debuts tonight on the CW) could be the last, although Ackles and co-star, Jared Padalecki, have contracts for a sixth season.

Anyway, during the fourth season, Dean (Ackles), wakes up in a grave after living through some serious torture in Hell.  Apparently, God ordered an angel named Castiel to rescue him and Dean and Sam (Padalecki) are recruited into a battle between Heaven and Hell since the whole reason Dean was revived was to stop Lilith from breaking the seals that would allow Lucifer to roam free.  It will be up to the Winchester brothers to fight off demons, spirits, Dracula (yeah, Dracula) and 7-foot-tall teddy bear in the ultimate battle for the future of humankind.
