Director Sam Raimi recently talked about Spider-Man 4 and I don’t know whether to be excited or worried. It already has a release date (May 6, 2011) but it doesn’t have a script or a confirmed cast. Honestly, that date is not that far away so I hope they think this through before they release something awful (and, to be honest, Spider-Man 3 was close to awful).

Spider Man - Image: Amazon.com

Of course, Raimi is remaining tight-lipped on the specifics but he did tell MTV the following: “We’re definitely talking about working from all the material in the comic books and nothing [invented] outside of that. All the characters or villain or villains, whatever we decide to do will be from Stan Lee’s creations or those that came after him.”

I didn’t expect him to deviate from the Marvel Universe but it is good to get the confirmation. We do know that Tobey Maguire has signed on but that Kirsten Dunst’s participation is in question so I wonder what will happen if they can’t reach a deal. It’s too early to kill off Mary Jane and Raimi doesn’t want to do the movie without her. I personally can’t stand Kirsten Dunst but it would be awkward to start over without her.

Also, when I hear a director say “villains” I get a little worried. I know that the comics feature more than one anti-hero but, for some reason, it doesn’t always translate well on film which was the case with the third film in this franchise. I think he should stick with one villain and have a nice, deep plot revolving around their relationship.

What do you think? Should they kill off Mary Jane (if Dunst doesn’t join the cast) even though it’s too early in their relationship for that to correspond with the comics? Is more than one villain okay for the fourth movie?

For those of you who missed the event—and who can blame you, since the excitement probably caused your brain to shut down for a few months or risk overloading—Activision called upon gamers to choose the cover art for the upcoming Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. Choices included “Spider-Man Whispers ‘Rosebud’” and “Spider-Man Scruffs a Wolverine.”

“Spider-Man Scruffs a Wolverine.” Looks like Venom did a naughty on the rug, too. I don’t know if I recommend Spider-Man’s method of discipline—I would not recommend touching Venom, period—but he’s the professional crime fighter. He knows what he’s doing.

I know Spidey’s actually crossing his arms and his demons are being reflected in his forearms for some deep reason I was not meant to understand, but at first glance, I see him picking up Wolverine and Venom by their necks. In fact, I can’t un-see it.

Thanks for your vote, Internet. I know it must’ve been rough to choose between generic and bland, but you’ve done an adequate job.
