We’ve had the Planet Earth series from Discovery Channel playing in the office as a sort of background noise and screen saver.

We’ve been talking about how much we would enjoy having this just playing in our houses as a similar background noise and to some degree like artwork hanging on the walls. The videography and imagery that’s caught on these discs is as much art as we would expect from photography from Ansell Adams or a painting from Claude Monet.

What we’d like to be added to the DVD series though would be alternate audio tracks that could be selected. An option for just having the music playing with no narration, or just the ambience sounds of the wind and animals, or perhaps the animal sounds and the musical orchestration as options.

In the series that we’re watching Sigourney Weaver does the narration and her voice is fine, but to have it just playing on TV’s throughout the house, it would be better to have no speaking.

Avatar doesn’t come out until December 18, 2009 but it’s already creating some serious buzz with the internet going into a frenzy with the release of the film’s trailer and I can totally understand why.

First of all, this will be the first movie that James Cameron has directed since Titanic back in 1997 (yeah, it’s really been that long!) so a lot of people are wondering if he still has the skills to create another huge blockbuster.

Then there’s the fact that this futuristic sci-fi flick will be combining CGI and live action and will be available in 3D. CNN is already saying that it’s going to revolutionize the kinds of films audiences watch and Jon Favreau, a director whom I deeply respect after Iron Man (I’m going to forget all about Zathura for now), has called the film “the future.” I felt like Iron Man was pushing the envelope so if Favreau is saying that, Avatar has got to be amazing.

The cast is also pretty great. Yeah, I know she’s getting older but no woman does sci-fi like Sigourney Weaver. She worked with Cameron on Aliens and I really loved that sequel (just watched that movie yesterday, ironically). Weaver is joined by Sam Worthington, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana and Giovanni Ribisi.

The plot surrounds Jake (Worthington), a paraplegic war veteran, who is brought to the planet Pandora, where a humanoid race, the Na’vi, have developed their language and culture. Of course, this is a major adjustment for the former Earth-dwelling humans.

Enough of my rambling – check out the trailer. I will admit that I wasn’t very interested in this movie until I watched it!

For the true geeks among us, there could be no bigger event at Comic-Con than uber-director James Cameron showing up to promote his shrouded-in-secrecy new project, Avatar. Not a single frame of footage, not one rendering or piece of concept art has been shown from the film. Until today.

For the true geeks among us, there could be no bigger event at Comic-Con than uber-director James Cameron showing up to promote his shrouded-in-secrecy new project, Avatar. Not a single frame of footage, not one rendering or piece of concept art has been shown from the film. Until today.

Cameron chose Comic-Con 2009 as the venue at which to unveil Avatar to the world, and he did not disappoint, delivering an in-depth preview of the film that stacked up at about 25 minutes of total footage! The film, which details a human war against an alien race set on their homeworld of Pandora, is rich with infinite details and the most photo-realistic CGI work I’ve ever seen. Even the main characters are largely rendered as CGI, but it is impeccably done — and it was shown in the 3D technology that Cameron himself helped to invent and perfect. It’s a staggering achievement, a bold new step into a new frontier for cinema.

I have the full panel for you below, along with a few pictures, but the biggest news came at the very end: Cameron announced that 15 minutes of Avatar will be shown in theaters, IMAX, and select 3D digital screens on August 21st entirely for free. He called it a new “social media” experiment, sort of a big-budget attempt at creating viral word-of-mouth. It’s being named “Avatar Day.” If what they show in those 15 minutes resembles the stuff we saw today, I’d advise you run to the nearest theater on 8/21 and see this for yourselves.
