Shorts comes to theaters tomorrow and the people I know are either excited or turned off by this family flick. I’m really undecided but two of my children seem to think it looks great so I’m probably going to see it at some point.

The film takes place in the suburbs since that’s where all the crazy stuff seems to happen. The locals all live a “cookie cutter” lifestyle since the houses all look the same and they all work for the same company. Things get crazy, however, when 11-year-old Toby (“Toe”) Thompson (Jimmy Bennett) finds a rainbow colored rock that grants wishes to anyone who holds it.

image: Warner Bros.

Of course, you can imagine how this might go wrong. People start wishing for crazy things and soon the little neighborhood is filled with tiny spaceships, giant boogers and more. These are harmless enough wishes derived from the imaginations of children but when the adults of their little suburb get ahold of the rock, the fun quickly ends. Toe and his friends will have to find a way to save the town but, along the way, everyone learns that what you wish for is not always what you really want.

The cast is very impressive and includes Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Leslie Mann (17 Again), William H. Macy (Fargo), James Spader (Boston Legal), Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) and more. This sounds like it could be a fun movie and the actors are definitely skilled so I’m hoping it lives up to its potential.
