My First Movies to See in 2010

I’ve been so busy the last few months that I haven’t really seen many movies that I’d like to see that have already come out and are working their way out of the theaters. We have a local Kerasotes theater here and their $5 Club is when we try to take advantage of current movies in the theaters.

I’m not sure if it’s going to happen, but I’d love to do what I did when I was single and spend the day watching movies in the theater. The ones on my list that are currently at Kerasotes $5 Club that I’d really like to see tomorrow are:

I’d like to take the kids to go see A Christmas Carol and The Blind Side, and then they can head home and I’ll stick around to see 2012 and Invictus. Have you see these movies? I’ve heard good reviews for all of them except 2012. However, I’d like to see 2012 because it’s just a huge production and the type of movie to watch on the large screen.

Then perhaps on Saturday I’ll catch Avatar in 3D IMAX and Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes.

Robert Downey Jr. continues his incredible comeback to the film industry by bringing the title role to life in Sherlock Holmes, which was released on Friday in theaters nationwide. I really wasn’t sure if it was a good idea since the storyline and character is a little dated, it didn’t seem like a good “Christmas day movie” and I thought it might look stupid.

Fortunately, as time went on, the trailers got better and soon it became apparent that it probably wasn’t going to suck. While the reviews are not stellar, they aren’t bad either, with sites like Rotten Tomatoes giving it a rating of 69% Fresh.

Downey has Jude Law in the role of his sidekick, Watson, and Rachel McAdams seems to provide a little more action than Holmes anticipated. In the meantime, the super sleuth has got to figure out a deadly plot that could destroy the country before it’s too late.

Pre-Order Sherlock Holmes for Nintendo DS

Sherlock Holmes, as a character, is making a huge comeback and I think that it’s mostly due to the fact that a new film about the sleuth (starring Robert Downey Jr.) will be hitting theatres on December 25, 2009.

Now the Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy game will become available on the Nintendo DS on July 14, 2009. The journey unfolds in London as Elizabeth Montcalfe tries to come to grips with the fact that her father, famed British archeologist Lord Montcalfe, committed suicide in a recent fire. The main thing that makes moving on so difficult is that Elizabeth isn’t convinced by Scotland Yard’s findings regarding her father’s death – in fact, she suspects that he could even be alive!

Elizabeth is determined to uncover the truth and she enlists Sherlock Holmes to help her solve this mystery. Their search takes them through the Montcalfe mansion and its many rooms which are packed full of Egyptian artifacts and treasures.

“Sherlock Holmes” Trailer and Production Stills

The new trailer for Sherlock Holmes hit the internet yesterday and it made me even more excited for this movie than I already was (if that was even possible). The film marks, what I believe, yet another example of Robert Downey Jr.’s triumphant return to the movie industry. I think he’s going to be spectacular and I feel that, along with his roles in Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, he’s demonstrating an extraordinary amount of versatility.

In the movie (set in 1891), detective Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr.) and his partner Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) must stop a huge conspiracy to destroy Britain. Basic enough. I know that Mark Strong will be portraying murderous cult leader, Lord Blackwood, and Rachel McAdams will take on the role of Irene Adler who is a femme fatale of sorts.

I know some people have been in a snit over the casting of Downey Jr. because Holmes is a British character but he did incredibly well in his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in 1992’s Chaplin (he was even nominated for an Academy Award) and I really don’t see what the big deal is. A lot of people have to put on fake accents for movies and this is no different.

Besides, when you look at these great production stills, you can’t help but think this is a great cast. I’m really excited!

The film, directed by Guy Ritchie, hits theaters on December 25, 2009. You can, however, check out this amazing looking trailer in the meantime.
