Taking passion for video games to another level

Taking passion for video games to another level

I’m talking about video game fanatics who choose to immortalize their favorite video game characters through tattoos. Check out these amazing images:

Personally, I wouldn’t go that far. Posters, floor tiles, accessories are more my thing than having my skin pierced by needles just to make a statement that I love Mario…. More »

Boss battles: Truly inspiring

Boss battles: Truly inspiring

Talk about inspiring. I’ve just finished my daily rounds of Internet video publishing websites and found this classic video on YouTube featuring the different boss fights of yesteryear. Contra! Mega Man! Castlevania! Legend of Zelda! Punch Out! Sigh. Let me just shut up and dish out the video:

Whew! Makes me wanna bring out the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Nintendo Family Computer again and play all the classics shown in the video … at least, until I reach the… More »

The History of Video Games in two minutes

The History of Video Games in two minutes

I’m currently watching a video on the history of video games by YouTube user applemctom, and my wife, Joyce, keeps asking me why I know majority of the games featured in the video. I guess my video games addiction is finally showing, eh? To test my mettle, I tried to list down in order all the games shown in the two-minute footage. Unfortunately, I didn’t get them all. Before I show my list (rather, before you take a look at… More »

10 arcade games I used to play #1

10 arcade games I used to play #1

Everybody has a Top 10, and I’m not one to be left out of the game. So, without further ado, I present to you, not in any particular order, the Top 10 Arcade Games I used to play (with stress on USED TO, since some of the games mentioned here are already in video game heaven as far as arcade owners are concerned):

Afterburner
Now, this is a video game, and it has a good “cabinet” to boot, giving you the feeling… More »

The Gaming Historian: Now this is edutainment

The Gaming Historian: Now this is edutainment

I’ve found this neat video on the Video Games Crash of 1983 by Normal Caruso, and all I can say after watching it from start to finish is, “Whoa!” Well, if we believe all points that Norman raised in the video, particularly the supposed factors that contributed to the fall of the video games industry in the early 1980s, well, then the video is in itself educational as well as entertaining.

Go check it out and judge for yourself:

Kudos to Norman… More »

Video game commercials of the 80s and 90s

Video game commercials of the 80s and 90s

Sigh. This is something we never had in this little tropical archipelago when every member of my generation was still young.

Oh, sure, we had tons of toy commercials, especially during those weekend cartoon marathons common in the 1980s to early 1990s. But, no, we didn’t have video game commercials—at least, I don’t remember watching them on television. Good thing we had that 7-Up Pac-Man commercial … you know, the one with the theme song derived from Kim Carnes’ Bette Davis’… More »

Street Fighter: More Touch of Death combos

Street Fighter: More Touch of Death combos

Picking up from where we left off, I was talking about Ken Masters’ Touch of Death combo on Street Fighter II. After a few tries (I’m trying to master it, but my fingers are kind of stiff, having been overused in MMORPGs), I’m thoroughly convinced that you can do a Touch of Death combo with all characters on the list of Street Fighter II.

This video proves me right:

I love the combo finish of Ken and Fei Long best…. More »

Street Fighter II: Ken’s Touch of Death Combo

Street Fighter II: Ken's Touch of Death Combo

I found this really nick trick for Ken Masters on Street Fighter II for the arcade, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Sega Genesis. It’s called the Touch of Death Combo, and I’ve been trying it out (trying being the operative term). The move actually entails two combos: the first disables an opponent, the second knocks them out. After a few tries on the ol’ SNES, I can say that it’s really effective (at least during those times that I executed… More »

Video game consoles, then and now

Video game consoles, then and now

Did you know that there have been at least 63 video game consoles and personal computers in the past 50 years? Well, I didn’t … honestly. So imagine my surprise when I came across this video:

The author of this mish-mash, however, missed the entire Apple line of personal computers. I owned an Apple IIc, so I know first-hand that a lot of video games can be played on the machine—that is, if any Apple computer is still intact to this… More »

Genesis classics coming to PS2 and PSP – Huzzah!

Genesis classics coming to PS2 and PSP - Huzzah!

I won’t go into too much detail because Racketboy already has a great article regarding this release on his blog, but if you haven’t seen it here’s the gist of the situation.

Sega have announced that a compilation of 28 classic Genesis titles will be available for your SonyTM PlaystationTM 2TM and your SonyOMG PlaystationWTF PortableLOL in the next few months.

There’s a ton of great titles on this compilation, but of course not every Sega fan will be happy with the… More »

Streets of Rage 2 – Mess you up real good…

Streets of Rage 2 - Mess you up real good...

Re:Retro commentor* GamerC has featured the following video… It is a good video, and you should watch it… It is a speedrun of seminal scrolling beat ‘em up Streets of Rage 2, arguably the best of the three…

It’s around half an hour long, but well worth it… If I said the words “Max”, “mania” and “atomic drop” to you would you be interested?

Now that’s something very special indeed… I only ever finished the game on the “mania” setting once, but… More »

Super Paper Sonic!

Super Paper Sonic!

Further to the announcement that the original Sonic the Hedgehog will be appearing on the GBA later this year, the celebrations continue with Sega of Japan making good with tons of great downloadable content, including this:

Aww yeah… It’s a downloadable papercraft Green Hill Zone! I’m not sure if I’ll ever try this out because some of the pieces in the downloadable PDF look a little fiddly, but it still looks pretty damn awesome…

Check out the papercraft on the Sega of… More »

Happy Birthday Sonic!

Happy Birthday Sonic!

That’s right, today is Sonic the Hedgehog’s 15th anniversary!

I can’t believe it’s been 15 whole years since I first played Sonic the Hedgehog on my trusty old Mega Drive.

We’d picked up a copy of Mean Machines (before it became Mean Machines Sega) and saw the review of Sonic’s console debut. The buzz surrounding the game was incredible and Mean Machines were suitably excited, making Sonic the cover star for their eighth issue.

They finally reviewed it in their tenth issue (link… More »

Overclock your Genesis

Overclock your Genesis

That’s what YouTube user kdx125XD did, as it demonstrated in the following videos.

The first is from Sonic the Hedgehog, anyone who has used the good old debug cheat will know, the perfect stress-test for the Genesis’ 7.61 MHz Motorola processor is pressing B and deploying a ton of Crabmeats. As you can see the newly overclocked Genesis handles their presence nicely, were it not for the fact that the game freezes intermitently.

Next up is Road Rash (or one of them… More »

Cellphone Sonic 2 announced! First Screens!

Cellphone Sonic 2 announced! First Screens!

After the huge success of the first Sonic cellphone game, Sonic Team have announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released as a preinstalled game on the Panasonic P902iS cellphone.

Unfortunately the site also states that it’s not known whether or not this game will be released seperately. Following the deserved success of the first game, which is currently riding high in the mobile games charts, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it get a standalone release. More details… More »
