As an NFL writer for the past ten years, Michael Oher’s remarkable story is not new to me. I was introduced via Michael Lewis’ 2006 book The Blind Side. It was a fascinating account of how the position of left tackle in the National Football League has evolved into one of its most important and highest-paying jobs. After all, the left tackle’s role is to protect the “blind side” of the highest-paid player on the team—the quarterback. The focus of the book is offensive line prodigy Michael Oher, a big, homeless ghetto kid from Memphis, taken in by a rich white family and a Christian high school.

The Blind Side / Image courtesy Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

In the new Warner Brothers film by the same name (in theaters Friday, Nov. 20), teenager Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) is surviving on his own—virtually homeless—when he is spotted on the street by Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock, who looks better than ever). Learning that the young man is one of her daughter’s classmates, Leigh Anne insists that Michael (aka “Big Mike”)—wearing shorts and a t-shirt in the dead of winter—come out of the cold. Without a moment’s hesitation, she invites him to stay at the Tuohy home for the night. What starts out as a gesture of kindness turns into something more as Michael becomes part of the Tuohy family despite the differences in their backgrounds.

Living in his new environment, Michael faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. And as the family helps Michael fulfill his potential, both on and off the football field, his presence in the Tuohys’ lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own.

I saw a screening of The Blind Side this past week. And while I don’t envision any Academy Award nominations, it is a very solid movie that every member of the family should see—a heart-warming, feel-good film that really shows the spirit of selfless giving and care that each of us can learn from. Maybe we won’t take matters to the extreme that Leigh Anne Tuohy did (or maybe we will), but we see the difference that can be made in another person’s life if we would take the time to open our eyes and get involved.

While at times a little corny and unbelievable (I can’t accept that Michael’s coach really answers his cell phone on the sideline or that Mrs. Tuohy pretty much takes over a team practice), The Blind Side has enough beauty in its message to accept the story as pretty much the way it happened. And even if it didn’t, we’re left kind of hoping that it did. The inevitable moments of turmoil do predictably appear, but not without a belief that things will get better. Quickly.

For Mary, it’s love at first sight but Steve doesn’t feel the same way so he’s more than happy when he has to take off to cover a hurricane off the coast of Texas. He tells her that he wishes she could come with him (what a mistake!) and takes off. Unfortunately, Mary sees that as an invitation.

As Steve criss-crosses the country covering breaking news stories, Mary continues to pop up and surprise him. While he tries to thwart her advances, the actions of self-serving reporter Hartman Hughes fuel on Mary’s obsession which is all fine and well until she ends up in harm’s way – at the center of the nation’s biggest news story. Of course, Steve starts to see Mary for the good person that she is and I’m guessing he starts to fall in love with her.

Yeah, this is one for DVD…

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds have paired up in The Proposal which actually looks like it could be a great romantic comedy. She definitely has a good track record for making these types of films and we know that Reynolds can bring humor to almost any movie. When I first heard about the casting, though, I thought she might seem too old for him (in real life, there is a 12-year difference) but it actually works.

In the movie, Bullock plays Margaret Tate, the executive editor-in-chief of a book publishing company. From the trailers, she looks like the boss from hell and directs most of her cruelty to her assistant, Andrew Paxton (Reynolds). Margaret gets quite a shock, however, when she learns that she is at risk of being deported which prompts her to tell the immigration agents that she’s actually getting married to Andrew (who is clearly shocked). In order to make their romance look more authentic, Margaret agrees to accompany Andrew to his grandmother’s birthday celebration – in Alaska.

There’s a scene in the trailer where both Bullock and Reynolds are naked and, in their frenzied reaction to seeing each other nude, she falls on top of him. Apparently, it is her first nude scene. Us Magazine quotes her as saying: “Sadly, my first and last nude scene got laughs, so I had to be very secure with that. It was all about choreography. I mean, literally when you read it on the page, you saw it, and then you realized, ‘OK, there is no way to shoot this unless you are buck naked!’ Then I went, ‘Go to the gym, cut out the carbs!’ I’m glad it made people laugh. Shooting it was odd. There are things stuck to areas that generally you don’t have things [stuck to]. I mean, you have things covering [your body], but not stuck to it. And then they got unstuck, and oddly we didn’t care because we were so tired.”

Reynolds chimed in and said: “Yeah, at that point, shame is gone completely. The weirdest part is calling your mom nude on set: ‘Hey, just checking in!’”

Film fact: In the movie, Margaret is about to be deported because she’s Canadian. In real life, Bullock is from Washington, DC but her co-star, Reynolds, is actually Canadian (he’s from Vancouver, British Columbia).

I’m really looking forward to seeing this movie. I’m not usually one to see romantic comedies but this actually looks pretty funny. Watch the trailer:
