When I first heard the story of Bill Bramanti’s designer beer coffin, I figured it had to be a one in a million thing.
You see, Mr. Branmanti’s favorite beer is Pabst Blue Ribbon. He is such a fan that he recently commissioned a coffin to look like a can of PBR. Bramanti ordered the silver casket decked out in red, white and blue from Panozzo Bros. Funeral Home in Chicago; Scott Sign Co. of Chicago designed the… More »
Shopping yesterday at Wegmans, I saw a Yuengling Lager Hot Sauce. I decided to check it out online before buying a bottle and – nothing. Not a mention on Yuengling’s site, or Wegman’s either.
Has anyone tried this?… More »
A colleague from b5′s tree hugging family tipped me off to this article on the world’s most expensive beer. The article prattles on about how great it is, but at 2008 Danish Krone (or over $426) a bottle you won’t be reading about it here. Apparently the folks at Jocobsen don’t really want you to read about it either, at least not if you don’t understand Danish…. More »
This is the coolest thing ever. The Asahi beerbot is a robot which is also a beer fridge, and it can pull out a beer, open it, and pour it into a glass for you. Even better, it holds up to six beers. The only problem is, it’s sold out, and since the manufacture of these beauties was an afterthought (it was originally developed as a contest prize), I don’t know as it will ever be in stock again.

I don’t really understand how facebook works, but apparently users have been using a facebook application called beer wars to rate and promote their favorite beers. The beer wars people describe it as follows:
In case you don’t already know, Beer Wars is a cool new Facebook app that allows you to nominate:
- the beer you’re drinking at the moment and
- your top three all-time favourites
Then, look on as word spreads, and thousands…..millions of other beer drinkers the world over go… More »
Now that you all have access to a free guide to homebrewing, you need a way to serve all of that wonderful, inexpensive beer you’ve been brewing. What would be better than your own kegerator? Thanks to the folks at Real Beer (who in turn got the info from the Beverage Factory), those of you who have a spare refrigerator sitting around can build one yourself. I’m thinking the refrigerator in our office may disappear mysteriously …
Man, I’m saving you… More »
As a beer lover, I’ve often considered brewing my own beer. The possibilities seem endless – brown ales, pale ales, stouts, fancy Belgian-style beers – all for a little effort and at a significantly lower cost than the same number of cases of beer. That, and I’d truly understand and know my beers.
Then I looked a little closer, at a whole lot of cleaning, lugging pots and bottles around, more cleaning, stirring and mixing, more cleaning, some sterilizing for… More »
Before Christmas I wrote a number of posts on what to give for Christmas. Interestingly enough, I received very few of those things, but that’s not to say I didn’t receive any beer-related presents. To the contrary.
One of the gifts I’ve enjoyed most is beer smarts, a set of trivia cards about (you guessed it) beer. The cards are divided into four different categories, cheers, wild cards, beer basics, and beer culture, and over the course of the year I’ll… More »
I’ve written about glasses before, and at some point I’ll write about beer temperature, but it probably won’t come as a great surprise to anyone who has read this blog for any period of time that I don’t like frosted mugs. Frosted mugs result in a beer that’s too cold in the beginning followed by beer that’s cool but watered down. The plastic ones with the ice or insulating materials have similar problems, plus they are plastic, and I just… More »
Sick and tired of losing your beer at a party? I remember my wedding reception, which was held at Stoudt’s brewery in lovely Adamstown, PA. I’d get a beer from the bar, wander over to a table, the dance floor, or wherever, put it down, and my beer would be immediately surrounded by a host of identical beer glasses with varying levels of beer. Either that or one of the staff would deem it abandoned and sweep it away in… More »
Sometimes when I’m shopping for beer I just grab something I know absolutely nothing about and hope for the best. It keeps me honest, and it ensures that I know what’s out there, even if I don’t like it in the end. Once in a while I discover a beer or brewery I really like (as was the case with Left Hand and Dogfish Head) and at other times it’s a complete dud (as with the Super-Duper Hopmeister ^2 or… More »
I posted earlier on possible gifts for your beer-oriented readers. If you want to give a gift which won’t be put on the bookshelf and possibly forgotten, you could always try a magazine subscription.
Homebrewers and those interested in the process and chemistry of brewing will likely enjoy Zymurgy, which comes free with membership in the American Homebrewers Association.
All About Beer is a more traditional beer magazine for the beer drinker, and seems like a pretty balanced magazine, all told…. More »
There are lots of gift ideas for beer drinkers, but one thing you might not have thought of is food. There are two types of food of interest to the average beer drinker, food made with beer and food which goes well with beer. Here are a few ideas for you.
Pretzels are great with beer, and the best hard pretzels are made in my home state of Pennsylvania. My favorite are the relatively unknown Martin’s, although my father has cast… More »
