The film is co-produced by Peter Jackson, who is best known for his masterful work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  I know that he did a good job with those movies but that doesn’t mean that District 9 is going to be good.  I don’t know what it is but something about this movie just doesn’t appeal to me at all.

Maybe part of the problem is that I just don’t quite understand the plot.  The film takes place in South Africa’s District 9 after non-humans are forced to live on earth in slum-like conditions.  A private company, Multi-National United (MNU), was contracted to control the aliens and they have ulterior motives since they stand to make a lot of money if they can make the aliens’ advanced weaponry work.

I’m still a little confused since I’ve heard that these weapons require alien DNA to activate them but I’m not going to ask any more questions.  I’ll see the movie eventually but, in the meantime, here’s the trailer:

Peter Jackson made his long awaited first trip to Comic-Con this year to promote his protege Neill Blomkamp‘s feature film debut, District 9. Rather than tell you all about this amazing-looking movie, I’ve got the full video of the event for you to watch and hear about it straight from Jackson, Blomkamp, and star newcomer Sharlto Copley.

Jackson fans will be keen to hear that he also discusses the current status of The Hobbit and the full details on what really happened to the Halo movie (and whether they hope to get back to it).

Directed by Neil Blomkamp, District 9, takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa after aliens (or “non-humans” as they are called in the film) are forced to live on earth under slum-like conditions.  I don’t really know or understand much more than that, at this point.  It currently has a release date of August 14, 2009.

The movie is being marketed through a bunch of online viral campaigns and, right until you see a grasshopper-looking alien, you might actually believe you are viewing footage from some sort of documentary.  The promotion feels very much like it did for Cloverfield and even The Blair Witch Project.

For example, the official website for the film, D-9.com, is supposedly run by Multi-National United (a fictional company from the movie that uses alien technology) while MNUSpreadsLies.com is a fictional blog run by a non-human equal rights advocate.  Could get kind of political but I will admit to being intrigued even though I find some of the effects a little disappointing…

There aren’t any production stills that I could find but I did watch the teaser trailer that was recently released.  Watch it and let me know what you think:

Could the proposed Halo movie crash into oblivion like a Covenant Wraith with a rocket up it’s rear end?

News reports state that production of the Halo movie has been halted until further notice. It seems Universal and Fox aren’t willing to pony-up the amount of money it would take to

“fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans throughout the world that we would settle for no less than bringing a first class film to the big screen.”

I’m sorry, but do they realize how popular this movie would be? Granted it would be a mega-budget movie, but I think the return on the investment from ticket sales, promotional items, toys, fast food branding, etc. If I were Bill Gates, I’d be funding this sucker myself and hiring some people to take the place of the studios.
