Slow Economy Boost TV Viewers

In times of slow economy, the television is booming amidst the barrage of online videos.

According to Nielsen, personal TV use as of the last quarter last year was up by 6 hours at 151 hours/month of usage. This means that Americans watch an average of 4.5 hours a day. American households watch on average 8 hours and 18 minutes a day.

Other notable facts:

31 percent of Internet activity occurs when consumers are also watching television. (Must. Have. More. Media.)

At 7 hours, 11 minutes per month, “timeshifted TV” is watched at double the pace as video online. But young viewers (18-24) watch video on the Internet and on a DVR at the same rate: about 5 hours per month.

Men continue to watch video on mobile phones more than women, and women continue to watch video on the Internet and television more than men.

During the fourth quarter, growth of online video was driven by events such as election coverage and the SNL/Sarah Palin clips.

Weekdays outpaced weekends for online video viewing in October with 65% of online video viewers streaming content between 9am–5pm Monday through Friday (i.e. I don’t feel like working today!), versus 51% of online video viewers logging on between 6am–8pm on weekends.

Teen Fights are a Hit in Online Video

It seems that teen fights have become a hit in online videos as students capture teenage people taunting each other, pointing fingers and circling until one of them charges forward to officially begin the fight and the would be amateur making a highlight reel.

While I do not support teenage fighting neither making a spectacle of such events and posted in internet sites, I think this should even make teenagers think twice about a fight as anyone around can instantly film them and use that as an evidence by local authorities or even their school administration.

In an excerpt of the story: Two girls circle each other, their fists clenched, as a crowd gathers. The teenagers keep their eyes trained on one another — each waiting for the other to make the first move.

The growing predominance of such videos online provides a glimpse into the savvy and growing multimedia youth culture. The number of youths using such sites continues to grow — challenging school officials with the task of navigating the new terrain and protecting students from intentional intimidation.

While school district policies regarding schoolyard fights have long been in place, the growing use of the Internet as a tool to perpetuate student disputes is forcing them to quickly redefine local and state policies.

“In the past, a school district’s authority was limited to school time, school property and school activities,” said Atascadero Unified School District Superintendent John Rogers. “Now that policy has extended our authority away from school time.”

The first test for Atascadero’s school district came last school year when an escalating student conflict led to threats of a fight made over a social networking site. The fight was prevented after a parent who had seen the online discussion complained to the school district.

In the past, students bickering away from school on their own time would have been dealt with by their parents, not school officials.
