Hull Announces Tour Dates

In support of their upcoming Beyond The Lightless Sky full-length, set for North American release on October 11, 2011 via The End Records, Brooklyn sludge rock conjurers HULL announced a near month-long U.S. tour. The journey is set to commence in Baltimore on October 23. HULL will be joined by The F*cking Wrath on select dates.

Gil Scott-Heron Dies at 62

Prolific musician, poet, author and hip-hop pioneer Gil Scott-Heron, who wrote The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, died in New York on Friday at age 62. Though the cause of death is unknown, Scott-Heron had been battling cocaine addiction and HIV infection for decades.

Considered the Godfather of Rap, Scott-Heron was a key figure in post-civil rights articulation of Black America, while his early works were a forerunner to modern hip-hop.

An outpouring of condolences hit Twitter from leaders in the rap industry including Diddy, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Lupe Fiasco and many others.

Death Row Resurrects O.F.T.B.’s “Damn Near Dead”

Go old school with this upcoming album from Death Row.

O.F.T.B.’s “Damn Near Dead” was originally produced by Death Row in 1995/96, but never released. But now, Death Row Records is set to release the album July 12.

O.F.T.B’s music is uncut, hardcore rap — “even doing time in the vault could soften these tracks.”

Growing up in the Nickerson Gardens Housing Projects in the Watts area of Los Angeles is the main reason for the fierceness of the tracks. Moving out of the projects didn’t remove anger and the pain lives inside O.F.T.B. But their background served them well, and O.F.T.B. succeeded with “Damn Near Dead.” The album has twelve tracks plus a bonus song and also includes tracks with Snoop, Kurupt and MC Hammer. This is a must hear for die hard Death Row fans.

Kanye West “Runaway” Video

Kanye West’s much-hyped short film “Runaway” has finally been made available to the public. The short is written by Hype Williams and directed by Kanye. The movie aims to promote the November 22 release of his fifth album – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

The story features Kanye bringing home a Phoenix (played by Selita Ebanks) who falls to earth. He nurtures her and tries to help her fit into modern culture.

“I make her my girlfriend, and people discriminate against her and eventually she has to burn herself alive and go back to her world,” Kanye told MTV. “I’ve been feeling the idea of the Phoenix. It’s been in my heart for a while. It’s maybe parallel to my career. I threw a Molotov cocktail on my career last year, in a way, and I had to come back as a better person.”

The short film features the title track “Runaway” as well as “Devil in a New Dress”, “POWER”, “All of the Lights” and “Lost in the World”.

If you can stand 34+ minutes of Kanye West, here you go …

In a survey conducted by the USTA of over 100 of the top tennis players in the world, the results were released of their favorite songs that get them pumped up before and during a match. These three below are the songs that some of the biggest names in tennis are listening to on their iPods before playing at the US Open or have requested the stadium crew to blast in between sets.

Lifehouse “Smoke in Mirrors” Album

Yesterday, rock group, Lifehouse, released their fifth album, which is called Smoke and Mirrors. This newest album is a bit more upbeat than usual Lifehouse material.

They have also released a digital deluxe version, which includes a re-recorded version of their song “Everything.” The song is originally off of their debut album, No Name Face.

Most of the tracks on the newest album were written by Lifehouse’s frontman, Jason Wade. Jude Cole also provided his song-writing skills to the album.

The deluxe edition of the album features five more tracks than the standard version.

The lead single off of the song is called “Halfway Gone”. Watch the music video for it below:

Danny Gokey “My Best Days”

Former American Idol contestant, Danny Gokey, may not have won the competition, but he certainly is making music regardless. His debut album is called My Best Days and is being released tomorrow.

Originally, the song “It’s Only” was supposed to be the first released track, however, they decided to release “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.”

In 2008, his wife passed away after complications arose while undergoing heart surgery. This was four weeks before Gokey auditioned for American Idol.

It’s a pretty symbolic song considering all that he’s gone through. It’s great to see him making music! Take a look at his video for “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me”:

Soulja Boy “Pretty Boy Swagg”

A new music video from Soulja Boy has been released. The video is for the song called “Pretty Boy Swagg.”

It looks like the track is off of his upcoming album, “The DeAndre Way.” The album title refers to his real name which is DeAndre Cortez Way.

Honestly, listening to the song and looking at the video, it just seems like a big joke. Is he being serious?! Maybe, it’s just me, but not only is the song stupid, but the video is so low quality.

I’m sure he’s earned enough money off of “Crank That” to come out with something better.
