On Sunday, over 3,000 athletes took part in the 9th Annual Nautica New York City Triathlon. The event is the only Olympic-distance triathlon in New York and offers $30,000 in prize money. The event included a 1,500 meter swim in the Hudson River, a 40 kilometer bike ride along Henry Hudson parkway and, of course, the 10k run Central Park.

This race has grown drastically since its inaugural when 683 people signed up.

“This triathlon began as part of New York City’s 2012 Olympic bid effort and has grown beyond our wildest imaginations,” said John Korff, the race’s organizer. “The sport of triathlon continues to be America’s fastest-growing spectator sport and every year, we regret that we have to turn people away.”

Greg Bennett (37) took his 4th consecutive win with a time of 1:45:50. All three top finishers (Bennett, Andy Potts and Matty Reid) came from Boulder, CO. Bennett is formerly from North Sydney Australia but now resides in Bouder.

Rebeccah Wassner (33) of NYC was the top female finisher with a time of 1:58:25 with Becky Lavelle and Margaret Shapiro finishing second and third respectively among the women.

Also featured as part of the event was the second annual IAMS 5-Mile Doggy Dash. Dogs and their human partners vied to win the coveted red fire hydrant. Nathan Kucera and Beowulf of New Haven, CT came in first.

The Fresh Air Fund, which began in 1877, is a great program that allows inner-city kids experience a memorable summer vacation. Since its inception, more than 1.5 million New York City children have enjoyed this program. If you want to help out and also improve your fitness level, consider participating in the NYC Half-Marathon for the Fresh Air Fund-Racers.

Image: FreshAir.org (screen shot)

The NYC Half-Marathon takes place on August 16th and by running with the Fresh Air Fund-Racers, you can help raise money to help allow the inner-city children live out their dreams of a summer vacation. Last year, this event raised in excess of $125,000 for the Fresh Air Fund.

Additional, the program is looking for host families who are willing to open their home and their hearts to a child from New York City who wouldn’t otherwise enjoy a summer vacation. If you can’t join in the NYC Half-Marathon with the Fresh Air Fund-Racers, this is another great way to help the cause.

For more information about the Fresh Air Fund-Racers, hosting a child or the Fresh Air Fund in general, visit FreshAir.org.
