If you’re a Scottish man with cancer, you have a 17% higher chance of dying than men in other parts of the United Kingdom, say researchers. Scottish men also have a higher risk of developing cancer in the first place.

Many things contribute to the development of certain cancers and not taking care of your health is one of the major contributors. We know that smoking causes lung cancer and increases the risk of mouth and throat cancers. We know that high-fat diets contribute to colorectal cancers. Too much sun causes skin cancer, and so on.

We also know that many cancers are treatable or manageable when they are caught early enough. But, for a cancer to be detected early, you have to go to the doctor for regular check ups, cancer screening, and to investigate signs and symptoms that could be pointing to cancer.

What it seems is happening in Scotland is a combination of the above. Many men aren’t taking care of themselves and many aren’t seeing doctors when they need to. The result? Poorer health and increased risk of developing cancer.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United Kingdom, after breast cancer (number one), are:

Prostate

Lung

Colorectal

Bladder

In the U.K., more than one in four people die from cancer, accounting for 30% of all deaths in men and 25% in women.
