“Mission Impossible 4” In Development

Tom Cruise could be bringing agent Ethan Hunt back to the big screen. According to Variety, the star has been talking with J.J. Abrams about co-producing a Mission: Impossible sequel which could be released in 2011. The project is taking shape at Paramount Pictures where some other great sequels are already in planning (Star Trek 2 and a third Transformers, for example).

I’m sure this development is surprising to many considering how nasty things got between Viacom chief, Sumner Redstone, and Cruise which led to a sudden deterioration of their 14-year relationship. I was really appalled by it at the time and I’m glad to hear that Redstone has been trying to mend fences and considers Cruise “a great actore and a good friend.”

I think that a good action film could be the right vehicle for putting Tom Cruise’s career back on the right track. I know that a lot of people disagree with his personal choices but I only care about whether his movies are any good.

Would you like to see a fourth installment of Mission: Impossible?” I know that I would. While I think the first one was probably the best, the sequels co-starring, Thandie Newton and Michelle Monaghan were pretty good and, of course, the action and stunts were amazing. Cruise will probably be 48 years old by the time this movie comes out so I wonder if making this movie will be tougher than the first three. Either way, I’m interested in seeing what they come up with.

Will Abrams Create a New Star Trek Series?

With J.J. Abrams breathing new life into the Star Trek film franchise, some are wondering if the director, who isn’t a stranger to making successful television shows (Lost), will consider creating a new series for the small screen. Heroes writer, Bryan Fuller, is quoted as saying: “I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams’ team I want to create another ‘Star Trek’ series and have an idea that I’m kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved ‘Voyager’ and ‘Deep Space Nine,’ but they seem to have lost the ‘60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin.”

Seriously? *Sigh* First, let’s see how this new Trek film goes before we resurrect the television series. Some people are already worried after seeing the trailers. I’m a self-admitted Trekkie and I will see the movie but, I will say, that the trailer didn’t exactly inspire me. Does it look action-packed? Yes. Are all of the main cast members there? Yes. Do the effects look good? Yes. Does it look true to the Star Trek franchise? Um… the jury is still out on that one.

Besides, with shows being cancelled like crazy nowadays, is there really money out there to put a proper budget into a project of this magnitude? Doubtful. If they try to cut corners and mess with the show too much, Trekkies everywhere are going to collectively freak out and I’ll be leading the pack.

What do you think? Would you want to see a new Star Trek television series? I’ll admit that I’m growing a little tired of the neverending procession of reality TV shows on right now so, if it was done properly, I might be tempted to check it out.
