Unfortunately, he assumes the shape of the dead husband of a Wisconsin widow (Karen Allen) who, understandably, freaks out when she seems him for the first time.  I actually was terrified (I was pretty young) when I first saw the scene when he transforms from this blog on the floor into a human being.  I thought it was scary as hell.

In the end, the widow (and I) was won over by his innocence and she actually ends up taking him on a road-trip in search of his spacecraft.  By then, the government has figured out that “Starman” is an alien (and they believe he poses a threat) so they try to hunt him down so the road-trip actually ends up being more like a car chase.

I’m a huge fan of John Carpenter’s work and this is definitely one of his best films.  It even earned Bridges a “Best Actor” nomination at the Oscars.  The recognition was well-deserved.
