Here in Toronto the city was alive with celebrity buzz during the Toronto International Film Festival. Amongst all the craze I was was lucky enough to catch up with the up-and-coming band Corduroy at The Drake Hotel. They were there to play a private TIFF launch party and to release their first Demoroy.

From Left to Right: Trevor Blumas, Matt Boudreau, Kev White, Darren Tarbat

The interview felt more like hanging out with a group of chill dudes who chatted about the concept behind their Demoroy series, their influences, their collaborative sound, and their guilty pleasures.

More of this exclusive interview below!

What the hell is a Demoroy? This is exactly what I asked myself as I walked to The Drake Hotel to interview the band. When I finally understood it to be a demo that they gave a catchy name to it all began to make sense. In fact, the concept behind the Demoroy is brilliant! The band has decided to release a series of said demo(roys) or 3 song EPs that will be offered for FREE (or pay what you can) at their shows. It’s a great publicity stunt and I wish I thought of it first.

The interview kicked off with me asking how the band got together and where their collaborative sound emerged from. The formation of Corduroy began with Trevor who had been making ‘bedroom recordings’ in L.A. while he pursued a career in acting. Trevor decided to put his music online and from there gained some exposure. It was Darren who all the way up in Toronto dug his sound and thought ‘hey, we should start a band’. The rest is history.

“I had a lot of free time when I was living in L.A. and started writing songs and putting them on the internet. And then these guys totally dug it!”

From there they connected and talked about starting an indie band. Trevor realized that L.A. wasn’t the place for such a band to begin and recognized Toronto as a great city with a great indie music scene. Trevor wanted to do more then just record songs in his bedroom and decided to move back to Canada to kick start what has now become Corduroy.

Although the band has lost a member and most recently gained a member ( bassist Matt Boudreau) their collaborative sound has always remained constant.Trevor explains:

“That’s actually the one thing that has stayed consistent from the beginning of the band. Through all the stylistic changes we’ve made and new approaches, we’ve always been a band that does a lot of group stuff.”

Matt described a past festival they played when he looked out and saw a variety of different people singing along. This you could say has been one of the major driving forces behind their new Demoroy project. It’s an attempt to get more people out to their shows and engage them with the band.

As a band they all agree that vocal harmony is the most beautiful thing in music, which is clearly reflected in their tunes. When asked about their influences Darren immediately said The Beatles, mainly because they perfected collaborative harmony. Their shows are engaging and get the crowd involved. It’s hard to resist when everyone around you is belting out Corduroy lyrics.

The interview ended with my colleague Sabrina Baldini asking if anyone had a guilty pleasure they were willing to share. The result: everyone singing in unison ‘Say You Will Be There‘ by The Spice Girls! It was definitely an interview to remember.

This is their first Corduroy Demoroy Vol. 1 for FREE download: http://drop.io/demoroy_vol1

You’re Welcome.

If you want to keep tabs on when the next Corduroy Demoroy Vol. 2 show is just check their Myspace on the reg.

Canadian indie rock band The Junction has just released a new album titled Another Link in the Chain. If you haven’t heard of them then I suggest you read on because this is a small band with a larger than life sound.

Mike Taylor, Brent Jackson, and Matt Jameson Photographed By: David Waldman

I was lucky enough to catch up with the lead singer Brent Jackson over some sushi prior to their CD Release Party at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Canada. It was a great experience and Brent was a pleasure to interview, mainly because he’s not shy and full of insight. He is an open book eager to share his take on music, life, and love.

It was in grade 9 that Brent and drummer Mike (‘Mikey’) Taylor discovered that they were into the same bands by comparing what they had penciled onto their notebooks. From there they walked to and from school talking about music and decided to jam. Brent explains that they weren’t really taking it seriously until grade 11 when they started dating girls.

They met their bassist Matt Jameson at a battle of the bands and the three have been rockin’ out ever since. “We’ve had members come and go and he’s the only one that really stuck.” Together they have been producing music for almost 10 years which not many bands can say. They have remained loyal to each other and their music which explains why Another Link in the Chain rocks! In my opinion it’s their best album.

Between bites of sushi and sips of green tea Brent continued to talk about The Junction and the trials and tribulations they’ve experienced. For starters they were originally signed with Universal but because of the labels lack of support and their corporate structure the relationship “crumbled”. Brent explains that they were “lost dogs in this huge place”. They didn’t get the backing they needed and higher-ups weren’t returning their phone calls.

“They didn’t even have the balls to tell us that there was no money left, they straight up just didn’t talk to us. So we said f— this, we’re not getting responses so we’ll just show up. We’ll just go in there and raise some hell.”

Luckily what resulted was a clean break. However, the band was back to square one: unsigned, a little disillusioned, and on the verge of breaking up.

More of this exclusive interview below plus the music video for My Love Was There and Another Link in the Chain giveaway!

“Either we break up and figure it out or find it in ourselves to keep going. Personally for me it wasn’t dead in my heart. We hadn’t peaked yet.”

The band decided to stay together and continue producing music. Brent realized that when you hit rock bottom you really have no where else to go but up. So he decided to take everything in around him and approach life with a ‘nothin’ to lose’ attitude. From there he began writing new songs which have since ended up on the new album. When you listen to Another Link in the Chain or if you check them out live this energy and optimism pumps through each song at full force.

Although this is a Canadian band they spent three months in New York to produce Another Link in the Chain with acclaimed producer Gus van Go (The Stills, Priestess, Diamond Nights). They all hit it off and Gus dug their sound. He wanted to work with them and even though it meant a slight pay cut for Gus he still did it. He saw their potential and he definitely helped unleash that in this album.

Enjoy the music video for My Love Was There. It’s a killer turn and I assure you you’ll be tappin’ your toes and humming it for the next few days.

If you’d have asked me who would win the very first interview with Michael Vick, I wouldn’t have said James Brown. But Brown was persistent and kept visiting him in prison and during home confinement. I guess Vick began to trust Brown, and thus felt comfortable telling his story.

Brown insists that this comfort isn’t going to make him any less the journalist, however. Vick sat down with Brown on Monday in an interview that will “air Sunday on 60 Minutes.” If you’re planning on watching, Tony Dungy and Wayne Pacelle (head of the Humane Society) will sit in on the interview as well.
Vick is expected to talk about “how many nights he cried in prison when he realized the error of his ways.” Maybe this interview will help people realize he’s done his time and to just let him be for now?

I read an article recently about how the use of social networks is really starting to impact people’s professional lives. There’s the challenge of your boss or employer in general being on the same network you are, whether it be twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or a host of others. Most large companies are using online services to monitor and watch what’s being said about them and their brand. Most of us should assume that there are people listening, regardless of whether we think they care of not.

Spending time in the recruiting business and as a manage for other offices, reviewing applications and doing a quick name search for applicants online was just something I did. I was amazed at what I found sometimes, and more amazed at the stories I’ve read.

I know someone who was looking for a job and shortly after the interview wrote on his blog and called the person that interviewed him an “idiot” and doesn’t know if he could ever work for that company. They were so “screwed” up he wasn’t sure if he could really turn them around and fix anything.

I can tell you right now. If he’d interviewed with me, there’s not a chance he would have gotten the job and you can believe I would have let my own network know about my experience as well.

There’s a balance between being “transparent”, the buzz word of choice for social media, and maintaining a healthy inner dialogue as the article stated.

I don’t know about you, but I am very surprised to see Tony Romo opening up about Jessica Simpson in the latest issue of Vanity Fair. Romo tends to keep his head down even while the two are out in public, so to see him comment in the interview with Jessica was a pleasant surprise.

He said:

“You know, it’s very hard when you lose, because games are important, and so many people put so much time and effort in. It’s nice to have someone to come home to and try and make you feel better… We’re very similar in that we both appreciate the hometown feel to a lot of things, and live our life like that. She comes to a ton of games. She’s a supportive girlfriend.”

It’s nice that he didn’t say, “She comes to a ton of games and that’s why I lose.”

The good chaps over at Working Title have interviewed the developer and owner of Autumn Moon Games, Bill Tiller, about the up and coming title, A Vampyre Story.

In zee article (some times I have a French accent in my head and think that I can replicate it here. It doesn’t work, I know, but it entertains me), Bill talks about what a big pain in the butt it is to find someone to publish an adventure game. Even though an adventure game has a great story, awesome graphics and good music, publishers feel a little whoozie putting out a game that might do as bad as 50 Cent: Bulletproof, which isn’t even an adventure game, but a game about gangstah’s shootin’ the Fuzz.

Bad Brain was going to publish A Vampyre Story, but thought better of it. Bill Tiller couldn’t understand why everyone was so afraid of adventure games, because he saw numbers while working for LucasArts on a different adventure games they had published and they did good financially.

Publishers are weird.

The great thing about having a publisher now, though, for Mr. Tiller is that he was able to double his staff quickly. This is good, because… well… they can get the game done faster. What was taking Bill and his previous staff a week to do, could be done in a matter of a day. So, why the 2008 release date? It makes me cry, I tell ya!

Also, the game is getting a lot of excitement over in Germany. I wonder why? OH BECAUSE GERMANS LOVE ADVENTURE GAMES.

And also, according to Bill, the artists who are working on the graphics of A Vampyre Story are also the same artists that worked on Curse of Monkey Island and The Digg. So… yes. The graphics WILL BE AWESOME.

He also reveals a basic plot to the story. Mona, who used to be an opera singer, becomes a vampire unwillingly. She hates being a vampire at first. Her master, Shrowdy (what an INGENIUS name for a vampire), doesn’t teach her anything about being a vampire in hopes that Mona will become completely dependent on him. Once she leaves old Shrowdy, she slowly begins to hone in on her black magic skillz and starts blowing crap up with her awesome mind powers.

Okay, they didn’t say anything about explosions, but wouldn’t that be awesome?!

Especially since the interview says that Mona is a good girl, trapped in a bad girl’s body and she just doesn’t want to hurt anyone with her wicked vampire ways. Oh, and she also has to suck blood. She doesn’t like doing that, but if you’re mean to her, she’ll happily suck your blood until you pass out… Riiiiight…

Sadly, Autumn Moon only has so much money to spend on their creative artists and musicians and they have decided to aim for a quality game that isn’t extremely long, but just long enough so that people feel that they’ve gotten their money’s worth. I guess that’s how most adventure games are, though, with the exception being THE LONGEST GAME EVER. Man, that was a long game.

You can view the article in its beautiful entirety here.

Go read it… fill your head with delicacies and love. Now, don’t get too lost into Working Title’s website. These guys are German, so most of the page is in German. I really need to pick up German, because there’s like a billion adventure gaming sites out there… but they’re all in GERMAN. I am a fool!
