Da Costa spent two seasons at Merrimack College. He scored 14 goals and 31 assists in 33 games this season, and was a second-team Hockey East All-Star.

The highly coveted player was scouted by as many as 20 teams during this season. Da Costa is from Paris and represented France in last year’s World Championships.

Public lists can be shared with other twitter users and the NHL has taken this functionality and created a very targeted business use for hockey fans. The NHL (@NHL on twitter) has created lists for each of the active NHL teams, as well as some older teams that no longer exist.

When the Twitter Lists functionality first appeared the folks behind @NHL decided to create the lists for each team and ask their followers which list they’d like to be added on as fan. To date they’ve received almost 4000 requests from twitter users. If you’d like to be added to a list, just tweet the NHL account @NHL and include the hashtag #myfavoriteNHLteam and they’ll add you to the list for that team.

The NHL has had to work with twitter to get around some of their limits, which currently allows a single account to only host a max of 20 lists. With the success of this real-world business use of the lists functionality, Twitter has allowed the @NHL account to host more than the 20 lists. The folks @NHL are now working on an option to let them share and interact with all of their lists above the 20 threshold.

Kudos to the NHL for pursuing this social media option for really interacting and building some interest around their teams. I wonder how long it takes for the other professional sports leagues to follow the NHL’s lead.

The former plays for Washington Capitals and the latter for Pittsburgh Penguins. Both are contenders for the NHL rookie of the year.

If you’re big on this scene, you would’ve heard of the Ovechkin-Crosby debate, which is over an intrigue as to whose fresh face to put to the league’s new, carefully crafted image.

Does that face, though, belong to Crosby, the polished, media-savvy, all-Canadian boy, or Ovechkin, the edgy Russian with the smoky visor and a Darth Vader-like nasty streak?

I reckon they’re having this ongoing rivalry since the article something about their stats.

Ovechkin staked his claim to rookie honours by becoming just the fourth player in NHL history to score 50 goals in his debut campaign; the 18-year-old Crosby countered by becoming the youngest player to score 100 points when he tallied 39 goals and 63 assists.

Hmmm. Interesting.

Both Hockey players are stars in the NHL. Playing in the international scene is optional but beneficial. But since the Capitals and Penguins failed to qualify for the post-season, both are available for National Team duty. So, off they go to their respective countries and represent in the world championship stage.

While dodging rivalry questions thrown his way, Ovechkin works on upping his game and making use of the international exposure to develop his skills in preparation for the Stanley Cup.

It’ll be the same for Crosby since on top of the Cup, he is also expected to take a leadership role when Canada hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics.

It doesn’t look like many other teams are really worried about the US chances this year either, the US team is ranked as a 6th seed in the games.

“Being the underdog puts less pressure on you,” Laviolette told Reuters in an interview at a Hurricanes practice in Raleigh.

Either way, I’m a huge fan of the Olympic games, so I’ll enjoy this little rivarly and maybe this will be another opportunity for me to learn a little more about the game of soccer on ice.

However, the truth is that hockey simply isn’t an American sport. Never will be. The best they can do is import players from other countries (hello expanded green card program). Y’know I love you guys, and I’m sincerely hoping you make it to the gold medal round again, but no way are you winning this year. It doesn’t matter how many fancy names and ultra hip uniforms you give the team. Y’all just aren’t hockey players!

So, I challenge the American bloggers. If you guys beat us in the gold medal game, I’ll not only apologize, I’ll actually cheer for the States at the next games (and vice versa). Deal? ;-)
