I’ve heard this show described in a lot of different ways but, most commonly, I’ve heard people compare it to The X-Files.  Let me just get this little vent out of the way.  Yes, both shows are about dealing with the unknown and there’s a male and a female working the cases but that’s basically where the similarities end for me and I feel that calling it an “update of The X-Files with the addition of terrorism and the office of Homeland Security” is just lazy.

The X-Files asked viewers to “believe” and the scenarios and relationships were realistic enough to allow people to take that leap.  We could plausibly see most of those episodes represented a somewhat exaggerated version of real-life.

Fringe, however, expects viewers to abandon all common sense and some people really enjoy it.  The storyline revolves around FBI special agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) , mad scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his son, “jack of all trades” Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) as they try to investigate and understand aspects of fringe science (rare diseases, transhumans with psychic abilities, teleportation, etc…).

The ratings haven’t been great but it’s moving to a new night (Thursday) so that might improve things.  Hopefully, the writers have looked at the feedback and reviews and worked on a few things – mainly character development.  I think that if the characters were more engaging, viewers could connect with the wacky theories and experiments a little better.
