The newest Friday The 13th movie will be released on DVD today and, if you’re a fan of the genre, I suggest you pick up a copy. As a huge fan of horror flicks, I generally hate the idea of one of the classics movies being remade. Fortunately, this movie continues the story and it not only does it in a clever way, it manages to capture the essence of the original film.

In the film, the story actually starts again – twice. The first group of campers are out in the woods looking for marijuana plants that they plan to sell. While they are all gathered around the campfire, one of the guys says that he thinks they have ended up in the area near Crystal Lake and he proceeds to tell them about the legend of Jason Voorhees. Of course, they laugh off the tale but soon they learn that the stories might contain a ring of truth. Believe it or not, this entire segment of the movie actually constitutes the introduction and then the real plot begins. It’s an incredible tease and the movie only gets better from this point forward.

I won’t go into any more detail but I will say that, while I mostly enjoyed the movie, fans might be turned off by some of the changes. For example, Jason runs. Gone is his iconic slow stalking and, instead, he’s a super smart, super fit killing machine. I felt that it was more realistic so I didn’t mind it but it did take away from the original cheese factor that viewers loved.

The actors were also too attractive. Between Jared Padalecki (Supernatural), Danielle Panabaker (Yours, Mine and Ours) and the rest of their friends, it felt like I could have been watching an episode of 90210.

On top of that, they were overly sexual. Yes, I know that the original movies contained a good amount of sex but this was just over-the-top, gratuitous nudity that added almost nothing to the plot.

My final gripe was that the score was not steady and terrifying but, rather, was all over the place. It detracted from the movie but, overall, in spite of my complaints, this was a good effort. Check out the trailer:
