The complete third season of Friday Night Lights is now available on DVD and can I just say how amazing it is that shows come out on DVD so quickly these days? It really makes catching up so much easier for folks who missed episodes or who want to start watching a new show.

I will confess to not watching this show on a regular basis but it does have a loyal fanbase. The show follows the life of, Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler), and his family as he coaches high school football team, the Dillon Panthers, and the members of the team.

I think the real appeal of the show is that it is set in a small town but deals with issues that are common in Middle America.

If you would like to read a detailed recap of each episode from the third season, check out the Friday Night Lights Season 3 page on IMDb.

In case you haven’t seen it, the drama is about a Texas high school football team. You can watch full episodes on the NBC website and read through the episode guides to catch up on what you’ve missed if you haven’t been watching the show from the beginning. I hear critics talking about how good it is but I’ve never given it a chance. I guess it’s time that I watched at least one episode.

Do you like the show? If you do, tell me what is good about it.

If this episode were on ESPN, it would feature a guest appearance by Mark May. On to the quotes.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Mrs. Coach’s sister, Aunt Shelley, showed up to <strike>mess with Mrs. Coach’s head</strike> help take care of the baby. The quote is their requisite screaming-girl-greeting. It got more and more depressive

You’re so incredibly talented. There’s a new addition to the ongoing Julie Taylor – Matt Saracen issue now has a new addition: the jersey chaser! Fun times. It’s pretty evident that Matt and Julie are going to end up back together, but there’s going to be more

You need to write a thank-you note to your grandma for those boobs. Yes, Grandma on Mrs. Coach’s side of the family. Thank you. From all of us.

Let’s see what he can do with his hands. Lyla’s juvie project is enrolling in school, and Buddy Garrity thinks he’d be a fine addition to the football team. He does pretty well in the general athletic drills, but seems pretty incapable of doing anything with the actual football. And because there are absolutely no defensive players on Friday Night Lights, it just doesn’t appear there’s a spot for him. Of course, Tim is going to teach him how to play fullback as part of Tim’s necessary redemption to get back on the team.

It’s really not a toy. Mrs. Coach caught Billy Riggins playing around with her breast pump before the their meeting about Tim’s eligibility. This was a very Taylor-mammary centered episode.

I know Riggins shouldn’t have gone to Mexcio and he’s disrespectful to you and the coaching staff. He drinks too much and misses too many practices, but I need him. Smash’s quest to get Riggins back on the team — and give him some holes to run through — might have been the best story line of the episode. If only because it included Smash being surprisingly existenstial AND Tim Riggins being accused of flirting with Mama Williams. Also, there was pie.

Watch his wheels, watch his wheels, here he goes! Watching your old high school sports triumphs at your birthday party can be depressing enough on its own. When your dad says “watch his wheels” during a clip of you running for a touchdown — when you’re now in a wheel chair – that’s probably pretty devastating.

This I’ll hold on too, so you can come pick it up. Jason Street, in his attempt to change, tried to purge himself of football by giving his old trophies to Coach. Street may have quit coaching, but I’m going to have to agree with Coach Taylor’s optimism about his return. He’ll be back.

You must be the new athletic director. Funny, you look a lot like the football coach Eric Taylor. Do you know my name. *No I don’t* Do you know what this is? It rhymes with boccerball. It’s a soccer ball, ok? Actually, it isn’t one. This here’s a rubber carcass. A soccer ball is something with air in it… The entirety of girl’s soccer coach Bobbi Roberts rant was a thing of uninterrupted beauty. Coach Taylor is not going to enjoy being Athletic Director Taylor, even if he is within “spitting distance” of last year’s salary.

God forgive us. You know what, the show actually did a pretty damn good job of wrapping up the Landry story line. Landry’s dad — Aaron Pierce from 24 — torched Landry’s car because the body turned up with some of Landry’s wagon’s upholstery. It turned into a pretty touching, though slightly exaggerated, act of familial responsibility. I’m sorry I doubted. I’m just glad it’s over.

I’ve been down this road before. Arrested Development had all sorts of rumors surrounding it. Showtime was going to pick it up to go with Weeds. HBO would have picked it up if HBO weren’t such uppity jerks about not having other networks “leftovers.” It was even rumored that NBC was going to grab it as a natural compliment for The Office. Of course, none of these things happened and AD went quietly with a four episode mini-marathon opposite the Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies. It now lives only pleasant memories, DVDs, and references that most people don’t get. (It’s like being part of a special club of people who do chicken dances that in no way resemble chickens.) And so, when I heard Friday Night Lights, my newest inevitably doomed favorite TV show, might be picked up by another network, I was guardedly excited. Then I heard the other network might be ESPN. Now I really am not sure how I should feel about this at all.

Is Friday Night Lights, NBC’s critically acclaimed, little-watched high school football drama, headed to ESPN? According to a source familiar with the proceedings, the self-proclaimed “World-wide Leader in Sports” is in talks to bring the flagging Texas-based show into its original programming stable.

This seems like fantastic news on the surface. It probably isn’t. FNL is notoriously expensive, with many on-location shots and a large cast. NBC is having trouble with its expenses, I doubt ESPN will be willing to pony up the necessary dough to keep it at the quality we’re accustomed to. I’ve spent the whole year complaining about how it appears that FNL has been spicing it up in a vain attempt to increase their viewership. ESPN isn’t exactly known for their subtlety. We could almost certainly expect more stories like the Landry-the-killer arc. And sweet fancy Moses, if Mike & Mike replace Slammin’ Sammy Mead, I might just lose it.

So, I’m saying this right now, if NBC is going to cancel Friday Night Lights, that should be the end of the show. Arrested Development might not have gone out on its own time-table, but it went out on its own terms. Let’s let FNL have that same (sort of) dignity, and not let it turn into a high school version of Playmakers. Because there are worse things than getting cancelled.

Well, I’ve been thinking. I’m pretty sure that an extended writer’s strike would be a death knell for Friday Night Lights. But who knows, the first season’s ratings should have been a death knell as well.

Like your hat. Jason Street’s hat is pretty awesome. I think we’ve seen the last of it, sadly.

Let’s go have some fun. Ah yes, the requisite “sports are supposed to be fun montage.” It is a necessary step in any coach’s redemption. Whenever the players are too uptight, it’s time to have a play around practice. In Dillon, the fat kids get to touch the ball and the little guys have to play a little d-line. In D2: The Might Ducks, Coach Gordon Bombay had them play some sort of rodeo round-up on skates.

Not now — or ever again. I don’t want to hear about you and Susan riding in the saddle. Coach Mac McGill had some advice to help Coach Taylor get some alone time with Mrs. Coach. Coach Taylor didn’t seem appreciative, but he did heed Mac’s advice. He still didn’t get any until he won a football game. That’s how Mrs. Coach works.

A booze cruise? This is your plan? Lyla shows some understandable reservations about Riggins intervention. To be honest, Riggins plan to confront Street about his shark surgery seemed like a great idea at the time. Booze cruises are the best. Of course, they didn’t expect Street to pull himself out of his chair and into the water. And I didn’t expect Street to swim to shore. But now that I’ve seen this, I really expect that anyone and everyone can swim. So Street’s not having the surgery and they’re all going back to Mexico. Presumably, Riggins will start playing football again.

I have tickets to the Decemberists, and I thought maybe… And it’s an OC style name-dropping of a band! Next stop, an appearance at the Bait Shop! Good thing that

Why is there a cop in my living room? He’s ending the Landry-on-the-lam storyline? Possibly? Please? No? Damnit.

She do anything yet? Matt Saracen going to his ex-girlfriend’s mother for advice on how to deal with his ex-girlfriend is quite awkward, but it really is his best option. At least he segued into it by asking if the new baby did any tricks. That’s always a good idea. It seems like she gave him some pretty sound advice anyways. Mrs. Coach is always a good person to go to for advice, no matter who you are.

We can either win together, or lose alone. Landry’s halftime speech may have cribbed a bit from Lost, but it led to the first full “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose” of the year, so I don’t have any problem with that.

Bring Lance up. — You mean Landry? — Lance, bring Lance up. Landry got some pt after his halftime speech. He caused a key fumble on an interception return and drew a pass interference call on the final play, leading to the game winning touchdown. What confused me is that Landry impressed coach when he was playing defense during the cross-over drills and his best play was a forced fumble. He should probably be playing defense. Since the defense has no apparent coach and is filled only with angry Latinos, he’ll probably keep playing tight end though.

Hold up, hold on. I would say that the pass interference flag Landry drew was the latest call I’ve ever seen. But then I remembered I saw the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.

I accidentally deleted last week’s episode from my TiVo, which meant I had to go to NBC.com to catch up for this week. This is a good time to remind you, the reader, that every single episode in the entire series run of Friday Night Lights is available online. Every single episode. Just wanted to remind you of that.
Did you see what happened? He threw it all the way and the other team made a touchdown. Grandma Saracen is like the Tim McCarver of high school football, but this captures pretty well how the Dillon Panthers second game went. (Not well.) Coach MacGregor’s all-Smash-all-the-time hasn’t really looked that good, which led to this…

Listen, the Eagle has landed. Buddy Garrity gets better and better each week. This was his attempt at sneakily informing Coach Taylor that they fired Coach MacGregor.

I live with my uncle who has a son, a cousin, a homie. A real inspiration to me. He taught me how to kill it selling weed to white people like you. Sister Lyla Garrity continues her Christian way of life by helping out a recently paroled Juvie. I’m going to be honest, I’m impressed that FNL is adding some more diverse racial issues than just the white-black classic. The book (and Texas) had the racial problems between the white, black and Latin community. Last year there was just the regrettable Angry Mexican Defensive Tackle episode. This season is much better (in this regard) with Lyla’s juvie and the Saracen’s in-home care lady. It’s real good FNL stuff.
Yeah, it’s my fault that we found the only honest cop in Mexico. Riggins in Mexico has been, as expected, fantastic. And because Street’s doctor is on vacation, he’ll be there next week. And so will Lyla Garrity. And so will Street’s new hat. Really, Mexico has been quite fun for a trip based around a doomed shark-based medical procedure that only gives a paraplegic false hope and takes plenty of his money. Also, I wonder how many sprints Riggins is going to have to run to get back on the team after spending a week AWOL in Mexico.

You’re spending all this time with a boy who doesn’t seem to have a name. Mrs. Coach’s heart-to-heart with Julie was uncomfortable for everyone, including me. That is just how heart-to-hearts tend to go with one’s parents. FNL nailed it, as it usually does with any Taylor interactions. Julie had the mom-inspired realization later in the episode, it seems like the Swede wasn’t really boyfriend material.

Clear eyes, Timmy! I’m just happy to hear that again. Full hearts, can’t lose.

Wait, is that it? Tyra was questioned about the body from the rived, but the police were only looking to identify that the body was the suspected rapist. This quote was her reaction to her brief questions. “Ist that is?” I hope so Tyra. I fear not, but I hope so.

I know that you were involved with this thing, and maybe you had your reasons, maybe you didn’t, but I want you to know I have a family too, and you just remember that. I’ll be seeing you again. And we have this year’s Voodoo Tatum! Coach MacGregor’s exit speech at Coach Taylor’s doorstep really was quite the sucker punch for me. I’ve been rooting for MacGregor’s ouster and Coach Taylor’s reinstatement, and now I kind of feel bad about it. Damn you Friday Night Lights writers.

Speaking of writers, I’m not sure how the upcoming Screenwriters’ Guild strike will affect FNL, but I have a feeling it won’t be very good for it.

(Thanks to FNL gallery for the pictures.)

Last week's non-homicide related episode of Friday Night Lights was fantastic. I'll bitch about Landry-on-the-lam soon enough. Before that I have plenty of good story lines to recap from last week, so you'll be ready for tonight's episode, "Backfire." I've decided that I want to start including quotes from the episode to introduce my little recaps, this is because these quotes are awesome.

Last week’s non-homicide related episode of Friday Night Lights was fantastic. I’ll bitch about Landry-on-the-lam soon enough. Before that I have plenty of good story lines to recap from last week, so you’ll be ready for tonight’s episode, “Backfire.” I’ve decided that I want to start including quotes from the episode to introduce my little recaps, this is because these quotes are awesome.

Mrs. Coach: “No, Julie and Matt didn’t break up.” Glen: “Yeah they did. It’s all over the school. It’s huge; everybody’s talking about it.” Ah….Glen the science-teacher-cum-interim-guidance-counselor hilariously reveals that the Taylor parents really have no idea what’s going on in Julie Taylor’s life. Later, Mrs. Coach less-hilariously hits Julie. Shit’s all effed up in the Taylor household.

Buddy Garrity: “I want you to listen to me Tim Riggins. I don’t want to ever hear you say that again. I’ve seen you play with a hangover many times and you played like a champ. This is because of that coach. This is all about MacGregor, and I don’t want you to put any of it on yourself. Ok?” Tim Riggins’ collapse led to this classic line from one Buddy Garrity. Buddy Garrity is on a roll my friends, Buddy Garrity is on a roll. He will get Coach MacGregor, you mark my words.

“Right, but doing laundry helps people.” I’m really excited about Matt Saracen and the live-in care lady. That is all.

“I guess I feel closer to God when I’m with you.” I’m not sure if that was “a line” from Tim Riggins, or if Lyla Garrity really has that effect on him. It could be either and either way, it’s hilarious. Anyways, it didn’t work, but the sexual tension between Lyla and Tim is still palpable.

“Friday Night at last!” – Hey, they played a game this week. Dillon won.

“I don’t have time to take advice from the team mascot.” Understandably, Jason Street quit his coaching position. Him and Riggins had a pretty solid bff/coach fight at the end. (Street couldn’t decide whether to use his coaching language or his friend language. He said he was an “awesome coach,” but he also said he was disappointed in Riggo. It’s little stuff like that that makes Friday Night Lights awesome.) Riggins responded a resounding “Mexico, eh” and the episode ended with the two heading off to Mexico for Street’s stem cell surgery. This leads me to believe tonight’s episode will be the seminal “trip to Mexico” episode which every teen drama is required to have at some point. Also, Riggins in Mexico has some unbelievable potential.

“What’s wrong with y’all.” I’m going to have to agree with Mama Williams on this one. The end of the game fight between Matt Saracen and Smash Williams was kind of ridiculous, but they had been building up to it. It probably would make more sense in the locker room or at practice than on the field, but c’est la vie. Hey, at least Smash actually is involved in a story line again.

“I hope I don’t regret this.” Coach Taylor is in for Buddy Garrity’s secret plan to save Dillon. Excellent.

Once again, the scenes-from-the-next featured the Landry-the-fugitive angle, which was thankfully downplayed in last week’s episode. (The Tyra-Landry morning after was pretty perfect though, as was Landry’s father’s beaming about his son playing up.) Either this is going to become the dominant story line, or NBC is just pretending it’s going to be the dominant story line. Although the latter is preferred, they’re both pretty stupid ideas. A potential good idea from the Peacock? There’s rumors that NBC might move FNL to Monday night at 10, filling in for the woeful Journeyman.

Every Friday I’m recapping the previous week’s episode of Friday Night Lights, in a vain attempt to get more viewers. I’ll recap the major story lines, give some predictions, and gripe if necessary. (It’s usually not necessary.)

- This season’s potentially disastrous story line was handled exceptionally well last episode. Instead of the usual cops-searching-the-school all-points-bulletin way that television usually handles a secret killing. Instead, the only cop was Landry’s dad. Him waiting on the sideline during practice was a fantastic “gotcha” from the show. Why did we ever doubt? Instead, the only drama surround Tyra and Landry’s secret has involved Tyra and Landry. And led to the eventual hook-up that we (and Landry, especially Landry) were hoping for.

- The Taylors continue to be in trouble. Mrs. Coach looks like she’s losing it, taking long Texas walks with her baby and crying a lot. A lot. During Coach Taylors trip to an NCAA hearing, it seemed like Coach Taylor has pretty much realized that he needs to head back to Dillon, but is in no way certain about how to do it. (Also, we finally got the definitive answer on Coach Taylor’s position at TMU: he’s the quarterback coach.) Julie kissed the Swede, and broke up with Matt.

- Don’t worry too much about Matt Saracen though. He now has a sassy live-in hottie to take care of Grandma Saracen. (I really hope they let Granny keep that tiara though.) Matt seems to be growing a little bit jealous of the “Smash-show” in Dillon and with that Tennessee Hillbilly Mouth-Breather Coach MacGregor.

- That’s the only Smash-show going on though, since episode two was just as Smash-lite as the first. The only real story line involving him is Saracen’s increasing jealous, and possibly Coach MacGregor’s man crush.

- Lyla Garrity might have said the longest prayer ever. And she’s totally still into Riggins.
- Buddy’s life falling apart reached a head when he got embarrassingly drunk at the Dillon Panthers kickoff party, which was not held at Garrity Motors. I really am disappointed I didn’t get to hear the entirety of Buddy Garrity’s story of his state championship.

- Jason Street has regained some of his muscle use in his right hand. His doctor still insists he’s not going to walk. In his dream, Mrs. Coach said otherwise. I can relate, Connie Britton is constantly in my dreams.
