Jerry Seinfeld has a big stake in the success of The Bee Movie. Not only did he co-write, produce and star in the animated movie that opens on Friday, but he also took on a prominent role in marketing the movie. Looks like if this one flops, there will only be one person to point the finger at – Jerry Seinfeld.

Let’s face it. People have high expectations for anything Jerry Seinfeld does that’s even remotely comedic. Everyone knows what the Jerry Seinfeld brand stands for because he was in our homes on our televisions in a show with his name on it every Thursday night for years. Can The Bee Movie live up to fans’ expectations of the Jerry Seinfeld brand? That remains to be seen.

Certainly, the marketing and promotion of The Bee Movie have been on overdrive with ads and marketing promotions just about everywhere you turn. When the movie premiered in Los Angeles this week, Jerry Seinfeld and his co-star, Renee Zellweger, arrived in a procession of Volkswagen Beetles that were fully wrapped for the event (see the picture above).

Tie-ins with McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD), Brachs and other companies as well as a marketing budget of tens of millions of dollars should get the word out about The Bee Movie, but is the market already over-saturated with The Bee Movie? Are we already tired of hearing about it before it’s even been released? Sometimes too much promotion can have a negative effect on sales.

I’d imagine adults will be curious about The Bee Movie, and kids will be interested just because it’s an animated film. I think that will translate to good numbers at the box office, but will movie-goers leave the theater saying Seinfeld has a winner or a loser on his hands? Will he meet their expectations? I suspect that word-of-mouth marketing could make or break this film.

What do you think? Are you going to see The Bee Movie? Can Jerry Seinfeld ever duplicate the success of Seinfeld?
