The NHL suspended Brendan Smith eight games for a hit in a preseason game between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. You can watch the Brendan Smith hit video below. The eight game suspension includes three preseason games and five regular season games.

Why did Brendan Smith get suspended? The NHL is trying to stop players from landing cheapshots to the head. This Brendan Smith hit, as you can see in the video, was exactly that.

Brendan Smith came across the ice and blasted Ben Smith, who was defenseless at the time of the hit. While it can be debated whether Brendan Smith meant to hit Ben Smith in the head, the NHL obviously wanted to send an early message this season.

Due to the suspension, Brendan Smith is out approximately $24K.

Will Jaromir Jagr Return to the NHL?

One of the best players in hockey history may be returning to the NHL. That is if anyone can find him. According to reports, the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins have offered Jagr contracts to return to the NHL next season. The problem? No one knows where Jagr is at the moment … so there is no answer either way.

After a very successful NHL career, Jagr left the league and has played in the Russian hockey league the last three seasons. With rumors floating around that Jagr was interested in a return, the Red Wings and Penguins wasted little time in making offers

Jagr, who turns 40 in February, scored 646 goals in his NHL career. Will he return? We should find out soon … once he’s located.

Mike Modano to the Detroit Red Wings

Mike Modano has been with the Dallas Stars franchise for more than 20 years. In that time, he has totaled 557 goals and 802 assists. That time, however, is up. The 40-year-old is leaving Dallas to sign a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

The Detroit Free Press broke this story and is reporting that Modano will make the announcement on Thursday. His contract is believed to be worth $1.25 million.

Though it’s undeniable that Modano has lost a lot of his ability due to his age, he’ll be a valuable leader for the Red Wings. Expecting to center the third line, Modano will also provide quality depth for the team.

As for the Stars, they have struggled the last few seasons and losing Modano officially brings in a new chapter for the organization. Fans may not be happy but Dallas needed to turn the page and rebuild under a new generation of players.

Detroit Red Wings Dent the Stanley Cup Video

A report has surfaced that one of the Detroit Red Wings players dropped the Stanley Cup at Cheli’s Chili Bar in Detroit. The result of the reported drop was a dent. The player suspected in dropping Lord Stanley is Brett Lebda, who better be polishing the Stanley Cup around the clock to try to reverse that bad mojo.

Cheli’s Chili Bar is owned by Detroit Red Wing Chris Chelios. The 46-year-old Chelios denied that the Stanley Cup was dented at his joint.
