There was a time when having the American Idol brand name attached to something meant instant success. The reality TV series has been one of the most popular programs on television for years now, but is the American Idol star beginning to fade? Has the brand that once seemed infallible becoming diluted?

Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood and more American Idol winners have earned great fame and fortune from their appearances on American Idol, but that success doesn’t seem to be coming for the winner of last season’s American Idol, Jordin Sparks, whose first album only sold 119,000 copies debuting on the charts at #10. That’s a disappointment considering 30,740,000 viewers watched the season finale of American Idol last season when Jordin Sparks won the title of the newest American Idol.

It could be argued that Jordin Sparks’ album did not get the same amount of publicity that former American Idol winners received when their debut albums hit stores. Whether or not that’s true, I don’t know. However, with the market flooded with American Idol winners and music award shows dominated by former American Idol contestants (think of the big wins by Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood at the recent American Music Awards and Country Music Awards), it could be that the market is oversaturated with the American Idol brand.

What do you think? Has the American Idol brand reached the peak of its lifecycle and on its decline, or is the low debut album sales for Jordin Sparks just an anomaly in the lifecycle of a brand that has yet to peak?
