“Dear John” Wins Box Office

Somebody had to dethrone Avatar eventually and I guess it’s not surprising that it’s the sappy film, Dear John, despite the fact that it got a palsy 29% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film stars Amanda Seyfriend and Channing Tatum in an adaptation of the romantic Nicolas Sparks novel, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

In the movie, idealistic college girl, Savannah Curtis (Seyfried), “was on spring break when she first met John Tyree (Tatum) while he was home on temporary leave. For the smitten soldier, it was practically love at first sight.”

Over the next seven years, Savannah sends John love letters and, although they keep him going when each deployment seems more dangerous than the last, they “ultimately yield consequences that neither the brave soldier nor his one true love could have ever foreseen.”

First Look: “The Eagle of the Ninth”

If you went to school in North America, it’s highly possible that you had to read Rosemary Sutcliff’s historical novel, The Eagle of the Ninth, at some point. If you enjoyed it, you might be happy to hear that a film adaptation is on its way starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell and Donald Sutherland. It is set to be released sometime in 2010 but I haven’t been able to find a firm date.

The story takes place during the second century AD and revolves around the life of a young Roman officer and his “search to discover the truth about the disappearance of his father’s legion in the north of Britain.” The plot was inspired by the legend of the Ninth Legion.

I liked the book so I think that this has the potential to be a pretty good movie, if they adapt it well. We’ll have to wait and see but, in the meantime, you can check out these pictures.

ON DVD: “Fighting”

Fighting is now out on DVD and I think I’m going to rent it. The film stars Channing Tatum as Shawn MacArthur, a small-town boy who ends up in New York City with nothing. To try to make ends meet, he starts selling knock-offs on the street but, after he meets scam artist Harvet Boarden (Terrence Howard), his life changes and he begins a career as a streetfighter.

Of course, any time you get involved with that kind of lifestyle, you’re going to run into some problems. Shawn enjoys taking down professional boxers, MMA champions and ultimate fighters but eventually he wants out of the business. Unfortunately, he’s got to find a way to get away from Harvey, who has been making money as Shawn’s manager.

I’ve heard that this isn’t the type of movie that’s going to win any awards but Tatum does give a decent performance. I’ll have to judge for myself but I have liked him in the past – even in lame movies like She’s The Man - so it’s worth a shot.

New This Week: “Fighting”

Fighting comes out in theaters tomorrow. The movie starring Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard forces viewers to take a hard look at the underworld of streetfighting.

When small-town boy Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) arrives in New York City, he has nothing. He turns to selling counterfeit goods on the streets to try to make a living but his life takes a dramatic change when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) sees that he has a natural talent for streetfighting.

Harvey takes on the role of Shawn’s manager and turns him into a star. Working in the corrupt bare-knuckle circuit, Shawn takes down professional boxers, mixed martial arts champs and ultimate fighters in a series of staggeringly intense bouts. Of course, this life can’t last forever and Shawn must find a way to escape the dark world and learns that, if he wants to leave, he needs to prepare for the toughest fight of his life.
