A couple episodes ago, rocker Rick Springfield showed Marcie what it feels like to be “Jessie’s Girl” (yeah, forgive the cheesy reference to his biggest song) much to the horror of her husband, Charlie.

I was pretty astonished by how far he went with the role considering the fact that he’s acting as himself and he’s being a pretty big douche bag but that’s what cameos are for, right?

Well, he’s back and he’s going to be naked!  Everyone “descends on Hank’s apartment for a hedonistic night none of them will soon forget. It all begins with Jackie (Eva Amurri) and her two stripper pals arriving on Hank’s doorstep unannounced and ends the next morning with an overdose, a proposal, a threesome, an explosive argument, and a possible divorce.”

I definitely don’t want to miss that episode!

While in the classroom, Karen meets Felicia Koons, the wife of the dean and, more importantly, the mother of Becca’s best friend, Chelsea.  Neither Hank nor Karen is particularly fond of Chelsea’s influence (or importance) in Becca’s life and it’s very clear that Karen dislikes Felicia from the moment she sets eyes on her.

Meanwhile, Runkel runs into trouble when he brings Rick Springfield (yes, the Rick Springfield) home and Marcy makes a play for the singer.  She’s still mad at Runkel for putting her at risk for an STD (she’s got the antibiotics to prove it).

Hank and Karen visit the Koons home where Karen meets Chelsea’s father, Stacy.  Things were already unpleasant since Becca had become infuriated by the suggestion that she return to New York with Karen to make a fresh start (and get away from this new friend).  Clearly, Becca shared this news with Chelsea who then proceeded to tell Hank and Karen that they robbing Becca of a privileged life since they are poor and would expect her to live in a tiny apartment in NYC (can you believe that b*tch?).  So, by the time they got to Chelsea’s house, they were more than annoyed.  The Koons invited them to stay for dinner but they explained that they already had plans with friends but Becca balked and said she didn’t want to go with them.  After some tense discussion, Hank and Karen agree to leave Becca behind.

At dinner with Marcy and Runkel, it becomes obvious that she’s trying to get into Rick Springfield’s pants and he’s more than willing to oblige.  Kathleen Turner was grosser than ever as Sue Collini but this was her best performance yet.  After Hank and Karen are summoned back to the Koons’ house for an emergency, Marcy and Rick head to her bedroom and her pleasure becomes more than obvious.  Runkel is devastated from listening to his wife in the throes of passion with another man and Collini tells him that the best way to get her back is to remind her of how amazing he can be.  As a favor, she fakes a massage orgasm and, all of a sudden, the sound in the other bedroom stops.  She leaves and Runkel looks hopeful for the first time in a long while.

At the Koons house, Hank and Karen learn that the girls have been drinking (they opened $3000 worth of wine) and they are stunned to see that Felicia has been partaking in the libations as well.  When the Koons try to smooth over the incident, things get ugly and Karen gets downright confrontational.  This upsets Becca but they don’t care.  Hank and Karen take charge of the situation and it almost looks like a make-up session could be in the works.

How complicated would it be if Karen picked up and moved back to Los Angeles?  I hope the writers give us a chance to find out!

Karen is in New York City and Hank is left to raise Becca on his own and his teenage daughter has turned into a surly young woman.  First of all, the whole reason why Hank stayed behind in Los Angeles was so that Becca could continue her romance with Damien.  The problem is that I haven’t seen him at all this season so the whole reason for Hank’s separation from Karen is bogus.

Hank has been given a job as a university professor where he works alongside the parents of one of Becca’s friends.  This presents all kinds of problems since, if you’re a fan of the show you’ll know that Hank has a problem respecting authority and has a tendency to be inappropriate.  In his first few days, a male student who seems to have a crush on him tries to commit suicide after Hank tells him he should give up writing.  Then there’s the female student who is secretly a stripper.  I’m not even going to talk about the problems there.

The divorce proceedings between Charlie and Marcy continue to be strained and, after learning about his legal rights, Charlie discovers that he can move back into the home he shared with his wife.  His attempts at winning her back, however, are not going well.

Okay, the last thing I’ve got to say is that Kathleen Turner is all kinds of nasty on the show.  She’s been added as Charlie’s boss and she’s so gross that it’s sad and distracting.

I’m thrilled because I think that both of these shows are pretty outstanding and I’m glad that audiences agree.

Dexter pulled in 1.924 million viewers while Californication attracted 1.203 million.  That’s pretty amazing for cable television shows (especially since this isn’t HBO, it’s Showtime folks).

I guess it helps that both series left off on sort of a major cliff hanger.  We knew that Dexter would return with a new baby and wife and then Karen had left Hank and Becca in California while she went to find herself (and a new career) in New York City.

Should be great seasons for both series!

Season two doesn’t quite live up to the excitement of the first one (in my opinion) because I felt like they were trying to get too much going with the storyline but, for the most part, it was very good.  It was a real emotional rollercoaster.

The season opens with a newly reunited Hank (David Duchovny) and Karen (Natascha McElhone) looking blissful and their daughter, Becca (Madeleine Martin), is thrilled to see them in love again.

After Karen asks Hank to get a vasectomy he gets arrested after fighting with a police officer, goes to jail and then meets record producer Lew Ashby (Callum Keith Rennie) who asks Hank to write his biography.

Sonja, yet another woman Hank slept with during the first season, invites him to a party and while Hank proposes to Karen it gets revealed that he might be the father of the baby Sonja is carrying.  Of course, that doesn’t go well and Hank and Karen break up.

Meanwhile, Charlie loses his job for masturbating in the office and then gets involved with the porn industry after becoming the agent and paternal figure of Daisy, an aspiring porn star.  Charlie ends up funding a movie called Vaginatown on the condition that Daisy is the lead actress.  He ends up sending his wife to rehab for her cocaine addiction and, while she’s away, he starts having an affair with Daisy.

Hank moves in with Lew Ashby and discovers that the music industry mogul has started a relationship with underaged Mia (Madeline Zima).  He tries to get Ashby to break it off with the girl but that’s easier said that done.

Becca also finds some romance in her life when she starts dating a boy named Damien but is horrified when she sees him kissing another girl at a party at Ashby’s house (to celebrate the success of the book that Mia stole from Hank and published as her own).

At that same party, Hank spots Ashby’s old girlfriend (the one that got away) and is thrilled that she’s finally accepted the invitation to the house and wants to patch things up with her former flame.  Hank goes upstairs to get Ashby, convinced he’s going to be thrilled only to find him overdosing on heroin, which he has mistaken for cocaine.  He dies.

Hank finishes Ashby’s biography, Charlie starts working at a BMW dealership in the Valley (Daisy didn’t want to be with him) and it’s clear that Hank isn’t the father of Sonja’s baby since the kid is dark-skinned.  This helps Hank and Karen begin to mend their relationship.  She accepts a job in New York and he’s happy to follow her but the plans quickly change when Damien apologizes to Becca and Hank feels it would be wrong to move her out of Los Angeles and away from her boyfriend.  Becca and Hank watch Karen’s plane take off and they walk together along the boardwalk of Venice Beach.

If you’ve ever seen the show (if you haven’t, you should definitely give it a chance!), you will know that it features some pretty inventive, but raunchy, sexual scenes.  I’ve often wondered how Duchovny has felt during filming and how I won’t have to guess anymore.

He said “the sex stuff, all that, we really don’t concern ourselves with it. Honestly. It’s like, it’s a scene or it’s not a scene. It’s got truth or it’s not got truth. It’s funny or it’s not funny. It’s in character or it’s not. And that’s all that we concern ourselves with. You know, it’s boring. But that’s why we’re good… That’s just what acting is, really…you punch in the clock, you go into work, and you’re playing a character. Personally, I’m not somebody that takes it home.”

Incredible!  I can’t imagine being emotionally (or even physically) neutral while gyrating naked against someone I was simply “doing a scene” with so it’s a bit hard for me to believe that it’s actually “boring.”  For now, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and believe him since he’s the famous actor and I’m just a blogger who writes about his life.

The third season of Californication is due to air on Showtime in September of 2009.

The Showtime program is one of my favorite things to watch on television (I also love Showtime’s Dexter and HBO’s Big Love) so I’m naturally a little protective of it.  I wasn’t a huge fan of this past season and, I realize they need to add people to keep it fresh but I hope they will be a little smarter about it this time around.

I haven’t seen Turner in anything super relevant lately but her recent pictures reveal that she may not be aging as well as one would hope.  She’s supposed to be a literary agent who has a crush on David Duchovny’s character, Hank Moody.  I really (REALLY) hope that doesn’t go anywhere.  *shudders*

Gallagher, who you probably last saw during his stint on Fox’s hit show The O.C., will play a university dean who, for whatever reason, gets into a scuffle with Hank.  Farr (Rescue Me, Numb3rs)  is set to be a sex-crazed grad student so maybe Hank gets it on with her, which upsets the dean of her school?

The third season of Californication premieres this fall.
