If you’re a Scottish man with cancer, you have a 17% higher chance of dying than men in other parts of the United Kingdom, say researchers. Scottish men also have a higher risk of developing cancer in the first place.

Many things contribute to the development of certain cancers and not taking care of your health is one of the major contributors. We know that smoking causes lung cancer and increases the risk of mouth and throat cancers. We know that high-fat diets contribute to colorectal cancers. Too much sun causes skin cancer, and so on.

We also know that many cancers are treatable or manageable when they are caught early enough. But, for a cancer to be detected early, you have to go to the doctor for regular check ups, cancer screening, and to investigate signs and symptoms that could be pointing to cancer.

What it seems is happening in Scotland is a combination of the above. Many men aren’t taking care of themselves and many aren’t seeing doctors when they need to. The result? Poorer health and increased risk of developing cancer.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United Kingdom, after breast cancer (number one), are:

Prostate

Lung

Colorectal

Bladder

In the U.K., more than one in four people die from cancer, accounting for 30% of all deaths in men and 25% in women.

Do you know someone affected by breast cancer in some way? Maybe a relative battled and lost their fight with breast cancer? Or a friend, acquaintance, colleague, someone you know has been affected by breast cancer at sometime in their life? Maybe you know someone whose mother, sister, grandmother, father, brother or son among the 2.5 million survivors of breast cancer who walk and work in America everyday. All of us have a connection to the battle to find a cure for breast cancer through someone we know, have met or whose life has been permanently extinguished or scarred by breast cancer.

Bobby Labonte's pink race car will be adorned with 13,000 names of people affected by breast cancer

On October 1, 2009 Ask.com and Susan G. Komen partnered together to hold the “Homepage Takeover” day. A single day event devoted to allowing Americans with a connection to the battle to eliminate breast cancer to create a tribute to someone living with breast cancer, a person who lost their battle with breast cancer or a survivor of breast cancer and post it on Ask.com for all to read and pay tribute to. The 13,000 participants in this one day event were honoured on Saturday in the NASCAR race being held at Lowe’s Motor Speedway by having the names of the 13,000 individuals they paid tribute too on October 1st added to the pink No 96 race car of Bobby Labonte.

We can defeat breast cancer by coming together and working toward the common goal of eradicating breast cancer from the lives of those we love. Ask.com, part of the seventh largest Internet property on Earth, and their 192 million monthly partners invite Americans to join Ask.com and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series in the fight to end breast cancer.

Throughout the month of October Ask.com will host the Ask.com Search for the Cure program, a program designed to allow interested individuals to participate in the battle to end breast cancer by answering a few questions concerning breast health and adopting a special homepage skin. Ask.com will donate up to $100,000 to the fight to eliminate breast cancer in partnership with concerned individuals who take part in the program from September 13 to October 13, 2009 and will continue to invest up to $1 million in the Search for the Cure Program and support of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series through until December 31, 2010.

If you want to pay tribute to those affected by breast cancer you can take part in the Search for the Cure program by heading to Ask.com’s homepage or at www.ask.com/cure. Working together hand in hand we can positively affect the lives of millions of Americans who will become affected by breast cancer in the years to come. Join the fight today!

Phil Mickelson, easily one of the most popular players in golf, is returning to the PGA tour, just a little less than a month after his wife Amy was discovered to have breast cancer. Mickelson’s return was buoyed by the news that the cancer was caught early enough so that Amy would not have to rush into surgery, or have to make any quick decisions regarding treatment.

Phil and Amy Mickelson (Image: Zuma Press)

According to Mickelson, his wife will undergo surgery sometime in the first week of July. Then they will have a better understanding of the cancer and what they will have to deal with afterwards.

It’s been a difficult time for both Phil and Amy, but they’ve received the support of fans and the PGA Tour Wives Association, who encouraged the players to wear pink during tournament play. Most players sported pink ribbons on their hats, while two players, John Daly and Rory Sabbatini, went one step further. Daly wore pink pants in support of Amy while playing in a European Tour event, and Sabbatini donned a pink shirt en route to winning the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Beyond the St. Jude Classic this weekend, Mickelson has his sights set on the U.S. Open next weekend at Bethpage Black, a course that he feels suits his game. So much so that he is not only playing to return some normalcy to his life, but because he feels the championship can be his for the taking.

Unfortunately Amy will not be there with Phil at Bethpage next week because of the emotion factor. It will be the first major that her husband has played in that she will have missed.
