Many of today’s young gamers have never enjoyed Pong or Centipede. Atari aims to change that. They are introducing a new generation of gamers to some of the most beloved old school video game classics with Atari’s Greatest Hits: Volume 1 on Nintendo DS.
Atari’s Greatest Hits: Volume 1 features dozens of the most popular Atari games including Asteroids, Pong, Centipede, Missile Comand, Lunar Lander and many more.
“The 50 games featured in Atari’s Greatest Hits: Volume 1 have defined a generation… More »
I don’t have a Wii. I want one but haven’t been able to convince Tucker that I need a PS3 AND a Wii so for the time being, I have to look at the nifty Wii games and wipe away the little tear that runs down my cheek.
However, that doesn’t mean that I’m so wrapped up in my I-don’t-have-a-Wii sorrow that I won’t share screenshots with you.
Ready 2 Rumble-Revolution came out last month and I think I’m in love.
I’ve said… More »
I know, I know … it was only a matter of time before the powerful allure of the past caught up with the equally powerful pull of the future, but the news is surprising nonetheless. Yes, retro games are now available for the iPhone, the 4.5 inch by 2.4 inch by 0.48 inch marvel of technology created by Apple, and have been for some time now.\r\n\r\nIGN\’s Levi Buchanan gives us the lowdown on retro video games on the iPhone:\r\n\r\nThe iPhone… More »
I’ve stumbled upon these unique piggy banks that allow you to, well, save while playing two classic video games, Tetris and Breakout. Of course, you need to deposit a coin to play a game, much like the way real arcade game machines function.
Come to think of it, these piggy bank arcade game machines don’t just force you to save but you can probably make them pay for themselves by allowing others to play Tetris and Breakout on them. Hey, at… More »
I’ve just viewed IGN’s video preview of the cast for the upcoming live action G.I. Joe the Movie, and it has gotten my loins all fired up for anything and everything G.I. Joe—especially the Baroness. Rawrr!
If you don’t have time to go through the video, you can check out Filmgecko’s writeup on the G.I. Joe movie cast.
Of course, since this blog is about classic and retro games, I’ve opted to, at least for the meantime, stick to the topic and… More »
Dangnabit! Someone beat me to writing a good book about retro gaming! Haha!\\\\r\\\\n\\\\r\\\\nSeriously now. Yes, someone has beaten me to the punch, but at least we get quality retro gaming tips and tricks from Chris Kohler, who has written a gamut of video gaming articles for a number of conventional and unconventional media like Wired, Official Playstation Magazine, 1up.com, IGN, Gamespy, Nintendo Official Magazine UK, and Electronic Gaming Monthly.\\\\r\\\\n\\\\r\\\\nHere\\\\\\\’s a little bit more about the author of Retro Gaming Hacks:\\\\r\\\\n\\\\r\\\\nKohler\\\\\\\’s… More »
Nothing screams Retro Gaming Fanatic more than apparel, t-shirts to be exact. Well, except for tattoos, which I consider as extreme fanaticism. Anyway, going back to the topic, I’ve found great t-shirts that feature—what else!—retro video gaming icons such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Ryu of Street Fighter fame.
Here are two of my favorite retro gaming t-shirts:
The maker of these retro video gaming t-shirts, 101tshirts.co.uk, also produce retro television, movie and music shirts. Not… More »
I’ve always been a big fan of stop motion animation. So it also means that I’m a fan of stop motion videos featuring our beloved retro games. In the past year, I’ve posted a few stop motion videos, including one that shows the Super Mario Brothers in Lego and one that substitutes Tetris blocks with living, breathing human beings.
For those who have no inkling of what stop motion animation is, here’s a short description from Wikipedia:
Stop motion (or frame-by-frame) is… More »
I never thought I’d see the day that Boulder Dash gets a makeover for modern consoles. Well, the game isn’t that old. Boulder Dash was originally released in 1984 for the Apple II, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Atari 400/800 home computers. Later, the game was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, Acorn Electron (what the hell is an Acorn Electron?), Amstrad CPC, Amiga, and the PC. I just find Boulder Dash—the original, that is—so unimaginative and boring.
Wait! Before… More »
In August, I posted my very first Blast from the past story that featured Pac-Man in a very memorable television commercial for 7-Up. What made the video, and thus the commercial, more memorable was the fact that I had the opportunity to watch it ad nauseum on television when I was a kid.
Recently, I came across another video of a television commercial featuring Pac-Man but for a different product: cereals. I never knew Pac-Man had his own cereal line. Cap’n… More »
Our favorite pellet-chomping, ghost-nipping machine is back in another video. This time, however, Pac-Man seems to be lost in another world, that of the Super Mario Brothers. Check out this fan-made video and find out what happens when Pac-Man meets the Super Mario Brothers:
I have to give credit to guys like YouTube user blairwja who seek to break the monotony of retro gaming by providing us with great and entertaining fan fiction. Now, if only someone comes up with a… More »
Remember Night Driver and all those nights you spent dropping quarters in the arcade machine while chomping down on slices upon slices of pizza? Well, I do, and about a dozen or more other people, remember playing video games not in the comfort of our own homes, but at the nearest Shakey’s Pizza Parlor.
I also remember that the different Shakey’s branches in this little tropical country I call home had different video arcade machines, ergo, different video games.
The most memorable,… More »
Yeah, those words I scrawled on the image above are exactly what I told my mother, oh, about 25 or so years ago, the age of video gaming discovery when Atari, Coleco and Nintendo dominated the market with their (then) outlandish-looking contraptions. I wasn’t pining for any of those, though. I was after a cool watch.
In this corner of the world, however, we also discovered, to our delight, that we can bring our video games to school with us, and… More »
