He wanted to stay in a hotel in the city but it would have required too much planning with the security personnel so he’s holed up in the Olympic Village. How unfortunate!

Some might think he’s overreacting but activists of any kind can get really out of control and it would be all too easy to hit him in the legs and dash all hopes of standing on the podium.

I understand that people feel like they should stand up for their beliefs but where do we draw the line? An athlete is afraid to walk the streets of Vancouver because he fears for his personal safety. Surely, this isn’t the right way to get the message across.

After their steamy vegetable ads were rejected from being shown during the Super Bowl in January, PETA kicked things up a notch with their “Live Make-Out Tour” in February leading up to Valentine’s Day. Basically the animal rights organization would go around to different cities, set up a mattress on a street corner and two PETA girls would proceed to makeout while wearing sexy lingerie.

From their press release from their Albuquerque event last month: “In a public display of passion that’s bound to raise a few eyebrows and turn lots of heads, two PETA beauties–decked out in sexy lingerie–will kiss and pose provocatively on a bed set up on the sidewalk at a busy Albuquerque intersection on Friday in order to make the point that vegetarians are better lovers.”

Though many men loved it, some gay rights groups weren’t pleased.

We get it. Sex sells, but does it sell vegetables and animal rights? I’m not sure that PETA’s ad campaigns accomplish anything more than adding to their wacky reputation.

The newest PETA campaign features Pink, Stella McCartney and Ricky Gervais. The campaign has Pink as the voice of a crocodile and British comedian Ricky Gervais as the voice of a rabbit. The animals have been skinned and start an argument with a couple picking up their coat and handbag in a cloakroom. It sounds like it might be a little more effective than girls making out on a street corner or humping vegetables.

The new commercial was screened at a news conference after Stella McCartney’s show at Paris Fashion Week. McCartney highlights animal-friendly alternatives in her fashions and supports the cause. However, various other labels (Christian Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier) have been targets of PETA protests in Paris.

Check out some more pictures from the banned PETA Super Bowl ads after the jump.
