Monday, June 27th is National HIV Testing Day. The Center for Disease Control estimates that more than one million people in the United States are living with HIV. Furthermore, one in five (21%) of those people living with HIV are unaware of their infection.

If you are having unprotected sex, you are putting yourself at risk for HIV, STDs and unwanted pregnancy. So don’t do it.

LifeStyles Condoms is sharing info about free testing locations throughout the country on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Before you hop into bed with someone, make sure that you both have been tested.

Throughout the weekend and beyond, LifeStyles Condoms will be sharing alarming statistics about HIV/AIDS in the U.S. on its Facebook and Twitter platforms. Their efforts are to raise awareness and incite conversation as well as to encourage people to get tested.

Did you know…

1 in 5 people living with HIV has no clue they’re infected.
More than 1.1 million people in the United States now live with HIV.
The 20% of people who don’t know they are infected with HIV are thought to be responsible for up to 70% of new infections.
New York City has the highest AIDS case rate in the country, with more AIDS cases than Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Washington DC combined.

Women OK with Circumcised Men

Hold the presses. Men who are circumcised, you no longer have to feel inferior to those who are uncircumcised. And men who still are intact – there’s no reason to gloat. A new study from Uganda has found that women can be satisfied by a circumcised man just as well as an uncircumcised one.

The circumcision issue is a hotly debated one, regardless of the part of the world you live in. In countries with high rates of HIV infection and AIDS, some research has been done that has suggested a relationship between a drop in HIV infection and male circumcision – as much as 50% to 60%, according to some reports. However, with male sexuality being such a strong issue and the relationship between a man’s penis and his feeling of sexuality, many men would not be willing to get a circumcision to prevent a disease which, seemingly has nothing to do with them.

Research such as this may take a lot of further proving, but could be a small step in convincing men that circumcision may not be a bad thing for all men.

The Cure for AIDS is… Lupus?

Researchers at the University of Texas Medical School believe they may have found a weak point in the human immunodeficiency virus.

HIV is invulnerable to vaccines because its envelope is always mutating. As such, antibodies cannot attach to it. However, the virus does require one part of its envelope to remain constant in order to attach to host cells.

That constant part, a tiny stretch of amino acids numbered 421-433 on envelope protein gp120, is the part that silences antibody-producing cells. The victim’s body thus continuously produces antibodies for the changing parts of the envelope, but not the constant part.

The researchers are now testing abzymes to attack just that constant part. The next step: human clinical trials.

The required abzymes occur naturally in patients with lupus. So the cure for AIDS is… lupus?

House is right.
