The New York Yankees have money to burn. However, that doesn’t mean the Yankees should be automatically forgiven for making a mistake with Nick Swisher.
On Saturday, the Yankees picked up the team option on Swisher. By doing so, Swisher will be with the team next year at a cost of $10.25 million. For his regular season production, this move makes sense. But when you factor in the playoffs, this move is a big mistake.
Swisher is a proven choker in the playoffs. In 38 career games in the postseason, he’s hitting just .169. His on-base percentage (.295) and slugging percentage (.323) are both embarrassingly low. This year, he hit .211 in the playoffs — and that was his best mark in his three years with the Yankees.
If the Yankees want to win another championship with their current group, they need a capable right fielder — not a proven choker.
