The nightmare scenario this offseason for the New York Yankees was losing CC Sabathia in free agency. On Tuesday, the Yankees made sure that didn’t happen when they gave Sabathia a $122 million deal over five seasons.
Last year, CC Sabathia held together the Yankees starting rotation. He was a Cy Young Award candidate for the entire season and finished with a 19-8 record and a 3.00 ERA.
Not only is CC Sabathia a great pitcher, his durability makes him even more valuable. In his three seasons with the Yankees, he has pitched at least 230 innings in each campaign.
Since he’s already 31 years old, the Yankees are taking on some risk with this deal. It’s entirely possible that CC Sabathia’s best days are behind him. That said, the Yankees simply could not afford to lose him this offseason.
