Traditional Soccer Handshake Banned

The traditional after match soccer handshake will be banned in minor league soccer games throughout Canada for fear of spreading the H1N1 virus. The move was decided by league members who have said that everyone needs to do more to stop the spread of the swine flu virus. The flu is spread from infected people to others through handshakes, fluids or air. Containing infected players would be ideal but some might be carrying the virus and don’t even know it.

Soccer is not the only place where people are breaking long standing traditions. Some Catholic churches have decided to not sprinkle Holy water or share the cup during sacrament meetings. Instead they chose to implement a no contact policy for their members.

As far as soccer games go. Players with instead face each other and applaud the opposing team. This might seem ridiculous but more needs to be done to stop the vicious spread of the H1N1 virus. Other countries and leagues are looking at changing their own traditions to help us all make it through the flu season.
