The New York Knicks and their fans thought they hit the lottery when they acquired Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets. However, a funny thing happened on the way to the Knicks dynasty. Instead of getting better, the Knicks have gotten a lot worse. They’ve lost six straight games and the team looks totally lost. Why do the Knicks suck? Here are our top five reasons.
5. Chauncey Billups Not a Fit
When the Knicks traded for Carmelo, they also got Chauncey Billups in the deal. While he’s a good player, Chauncey Billups isn’t a fit in Mike D’Antoni’s offense. Billups likes to control the ball, run the offense and look for good shots. D’Antoni wants his offense to be an up-tempo free for all. Oil and water.
4. Carmelo Anthony Can’t Pass
The Knicks were winning games earlier this year by sharing the ball and making it difficult for opponents to focus on any single aspect of their attack. With Carmelo Anthony in the mix, opponents know where the Knicks want to go. And since Carmelo isn’t a talented passer, opponents aren’t penalized very often for sending a lot of extra help.
3. Amare Stoudemire is Tired
In November and December, Amare Stoudemire was an MVP candidate. But by playing heavy minutes on a team that plays at a fast pace, Amare has seemingly gotten tired. His scoring is down. His rebounding is down. His shot blocking is down. Basically, he just doesn’t have his typical energy.
2. Loss of Depth
Don’t overlook the fact that the Knicks gave up a whole lot of depth in their trade to acquire Carmelo. As a result, the Knicks might have the worst and least talented bench in the NBA right now.
1. No Defense
The Knicks have a ton offensive firepower. The problem is that all the main weapons suck at defense. Carmelo doesn’t play D. Amare doesn’t defense. Billups is too slow nowadays. And we all know D’Antoni doesn’t care much about coaching defense. The results, not surprisingly, is a team that is absolutely horrible on D.
