For the first time ever, the San Francisco Giants are World Series champions. Thanks to a big hit by World Series MVP Edgar Renteria and another dominant performance by two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, the Giants topped the Texas Rangers 3-1 in Game 5 to take home the World Series trophy.
Heading into the seventh inning, Lincecum and Cliff Lee were sizzling. With the score 0-0, Renteria came to the plate with two on. The light-hitting shortstop stunned the world by hitting a three-run homer off of Lee to give the Giants more than enough runs.
For the World Series, Renteria hit .412 with two homers. In the entire regular season, the native of Colombia had only three homers. He battled injuries and ineffective play for much of the season.
Said Renteria: “It was a tough year for me. I told myself to keep working hard and keep in shape because something is going to be good this year.”
Renteria was right … and now he’s a World Series MVP for a team that hadn’t won it all since moving West from Brooklyn.
