I’ve always thought Russell Westbrook was overrated. In the 2011 Western Conference Finals, the All-Star point guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder is being outed as a fraud. Yeah, he’s a good player — but he’s far from the up-and-coming superstar he’s made out to be. In fact, Russell Westbrook isn’t even really a point guard.
When the ball is in his hands, Russell Westbrook looks to score first, second and third. He doesn’t have very good court vision and struggles to run plays in the half-court offense. Everything about him screams shooting guard.
Russell Westbrook being a fraudulent point guard is especially damning for the Thunder because he takes away touches from Kevin Durant, arguably the best scorer in the world. In all circumstances, Kevin Durant should be the first option. However, with Russell Westbrook running the show, that doesn’t happen as often as it should.
Against the Dallas Mavericks, the world is now beginning to see Russell Westbrook’s overrated play negatively affect the Thunder. In Game 1, he was destroyed by the corpse of Jason Kidd as the Thunder lost. Oklahoma City was able to win Game 2, however the Thunder played the entire fourth quarter with Russell Westbrook on the bench.
In Game 3, as the Thunder were trying to pull out a come from behind win, Russell Westbrook single-handedly thwarted the effort by ball hogging and trying to be a hero. For a stretch late in the fourth, Kevin Durant didn’t touch the basketball as Russell Westbrook either missed shots or turned it over repeatedly.
The Thunder aren’t beating the Mavs and won’t be advancing to the Finals. That, however, shouldn’t be the Thunder’s biggest concern. Their main worry should be that Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant simply can’t co-exist on a long-term basis. Kevin Durant needs to be paired with a true point guard so that he can reach his true potential.
As for Russell Westbrook, he needs to either become a full-time shooting guard or the Thunder need to trade him to a new team.

Russell Westbrook Overrated

And I suppose Kobe Bryant, Pau gasol, Lebron James, Dwana Wade and Chris Bosh were also all defrauded by Dirk? Also, while Durant was killing, he also kept messing up against Mavricks late in the games. Looks like he’s been working hard over the summer though.
First off, Westbrook is 22(still college elligibility) and probably the second most athletic player in the NBA, of course behind Derrick Rose. But lets compare them DR-25 ppg, 1 spg, 7.7 apg, 4.1 rpg, fg% .445, ft% 858, 3.43 tpg Russell Westbrook 21.9 ppg, 1.9 spg, 8.2 apg, 4.6 rpg, FG%.442 , ft% 842, 3.85 tpg Derrick Rose is a PG and scores more then Russell, Derrick Rose took 207 more shots then Russell. He is no Derrick Rose but give him a break. Hes young, hes 22. Russell will never be a shooting guard, hes a hybrid pg which an incredible driving ability, he isn’t a fabulous shooter. Russell will learn over time that he does have other players open as the team gets to become better shooters like Serge Ibaka, James Harden and even KD. If you even watch Thunder games you’ll realize how tight of coverage KD gets, sometimes its near impossible for him to shoot, let alone get the ball. KD needs to get bigger so he has the ability to break away from players and get a open shot. This is a team in learning. The 5 best players are 22,22,21,22,26. Just look at that. Once this team is atleast 25 they will have a championship. Be patient with KD and Russell, they are bestfriends for godsakes. These 2 will win a championship. Should the Thunder even be in the Western Finals? I’m a fan and sure didn’t think they would make it this far. I agree that Russell is somewhat of a ball hog but what can you do when Marion or Tony Allen or Shane Battier are literally glued to Kevin Durant? Westbrook IS NOT OVERRATED. Do some research, what should I expect from fox sports anyways? Who likes Fox?
