Fair Grounds Recap – Jan 22nd
Fast main track and firm turf course. Early-pressing types best in sprints, with the exception of $105.60 late running bomber O Night Divine. Lone dirt route was nabbed by a midpack runner. Four turf routes were all nabbed by off the pace types.
Shaun Bridgmohan and Steve Asmussen teamed up for two turf wins.
Gulch’s Belle (3rd race) rallied to finish a clear 2nd from the outside post. Should not be a maiden much longer.
On the analysis front, I got home tops Chef Eric ($4.80) and Scorpian’s Ruckus ($8.20). I also tabbed the 3rd race exacta ($18).

Friesan Fire puts blinkers back on and tries to get back on the beam in the Louisiana Handicap at Fair Grounds on Jan 23rd.
Fair Grounds Preview – Jan 23rd
A 13-race program will be run on Saturday at the Fair Grounds. Mostly cloudy skies are expected with a high temperature of 71. Pick six carryover of $1,616.
Six stakes races on Saturday as part of the Road to the Derby program, and below is a preview…
Grade 3 Colonel E. R. Bradley: El Caballo is the 2-1 morning line favorite, and he has not been seen since winning an optional claiming event at Churchill in June. The consistent Princeville Condo is sharp and holds a recency edge. Check out Horse Racing Nation for my analysis of this race.
Louisiana Handicap: ’09 Triple Crown series also-rans General Quarters and Friesan Fire take on horse for course and defending champ Good And Lucky.
Tiffany Lass: This mile and forty yard test for 3yo fillies features Delta Princess (G3) winner Quiet Temper, and she easily captured her local allowance prep for this.
Dr. A. B. Leggio Memorial: Wide open turf sprint, and morning line fav Coy Cat is 3 for 3 over the local grass course.
Grade 3 Lecomte: Early season 3yo prep for the Louisiana Derby, and Turf Melody is the tepid choice following a minor stakes tally at Remington Park. I am editor of the CBS Sports horse racing page, and I have posted analysis of this race on that website.
F. W. Gaudin Memorial: Cash Refund and Euroears figure to vie for favoritism in here, and something’s gotta give as both are undefeated over the local main.
My daily full cards from Fair Grounds are available through Today’s Racing Digest (free sign up). I also have a Digest free pick page, and my Saturday free selection is the 12th race from Fair Grounds.
